PREVENTION OF CERVICAL CANCER.
Cancer of the cervix can be described as a SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE. In 99% of cases it is caused by the HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS PAPILLOMA VIRUS(HPV) which is contracted almost exclusively through the various types of sexual in*******se. HPV VACCINES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED.So it will not be an exaggeration to state that cancer of the cervix , unlike any other cancer, can be totally eradicated over time ,just like SMALLPOX , with a well-structured and properly sustained vaccination programme for our young ones before they become sexually active. Others who miss the early vaccination will utilise the routine screening and early detection methods like the Pap smear. HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS (HPV) VACCINE

HPV is found on the skin and mucous membranes of humans. The infection is spread through skin to skin contact, most commonly through sexual in*******se. It would be safe to state that almost,if not all, sexually active individuals who indulge in unprotected activity sexual activities must have contracted HPV infection. The infections cause no symptoms but are responsible for most ge***al malignancies especially cancer of the cervix . HPV is responsible for 99% of cervical cancers. That is why cancer of the cervix is commonly referred to as a SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE. Since the cause of the cancer is known it means that if children can be vaccinated before they become sexually active cancer of the cervix can be completely eliminated in future generations.This is an exciting prospect. HUMAN. PAPILLOMA VIRUS
Human Papilloma virus belong to a group of viruses that infect the human skin and mucosa. They are usually transmitted through skin to skin contact more commonly through sexual in*******se including oral and a**l sexual in*******se. They cause no symptoms and quite often the virus is eliminated from the body within 2-3 years but reinfection is quite common. There are some persistent types that resist spontaneous clearance from the body. These are the ones that are responsible for cancer of the cervix. They deposit their DNA on the surface of the cervix and trigger changes that lead to the emergence of of precancerous cells. These abnormal cells are picked up through routine Pap smear. Almost,if not all persons that are sexually active and indulge in unprotected activity are infected with HPV. This video provides all the relevant details about HPV.

Pap smear is a simple medical test used for the detection of abnormal cells in the cervix of the womb. These cells, if left unattended , will become cancerous many years down the line. If these abnormal cells are detected and attended to promptly cancer will be prevented. The rate of cancer of the cervix in many western and Middle East countries that have instituted and effectively implement the Pap smear programme is very low. Unfortunately the rate of cervical cancer in Nigeria remains very high because there is little awareness about Pap smear and no coordinated National programme .

ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is an oestrogen- dependent inflammatory disorder caused by the backward flow of some menstrual blood through the Fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity. This leads to the implantation of endometrial-like glands(which usually line the innermost layer of the endometrial cavity and sheds every month as menstruation) in different parts of the pelvic peritoneum and in the various pelvic organs like the ovaries, tubes and intestines. These glands,once implanted, begin to respond to the ovarian hormones. They shed and bleed during menstruation but the blood is trapped within the pelvic cavity leading to adhesions, fibrosis, infertility ,chronic pelvic pain and impact negatively on a woman’s quality of life.There is no cure. Available treatments provide varying degrees of relief.

ADENOMYOSIS
Adenomyosis is a chronic but benign condition in which endometrial tissue,which usually lines the innermost layer of the womb’s cavity and sheds monthly as menstruation invades invades and deposits in the muscle layer(myometrium) of the womb and starts behaving like the endometrium inside the womb . It sheds and bleeds monthly but the blood is unable to track out and is trapped in the myometrium. This process continues every month, the womb gets larger and becomes very tender. This development leads to heavy menstruation, menstrual pain and chronic,debilitating pelvic pain. This condition afflicts over 20% of women worldwide, in the 35 - 50 years age group.
