Message on Children’s Mental Health

By Dr. Prof. Auwalu Sani Salihu

Medical Director, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Dawanau, Kano_

As we celebrate our children today, let us remember that their smiles are not the only measure of their wellbeing.

Mental health disorders in children are real, common, and treatable.

Anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma-related conditions can affect how a child learns, relates to others, and sees themselves. When ignored, they grow into burdens that follow a child into adulthood.

Early recognition and early intervention save futures.
1. *Listen without judgment* when a child speaks about fear, sadness, or anger.
2. *Watch for changes* in sleep, appetite, school performance, and play.
3. *Seek professional help early* — mental health care is health care.

A child’s brain is developing. The right support at the right time can change the entire trajectory of their life. Let us build homes, schools, and communities where it is safe for children to talk about what they feel.

On this Children’s Day, my call is simple: *Protect their minds as fiercely as you protect their bodies.

Eid Al-Adha Greetings and a Renewed Call for Mental Health Awareness

On behalf of the Management and Staff of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Dawanau, Kano, I extend warm Eid Al-Adha greetings to all Muslim faithful, our esteemed staff, and the general public.

As we commemorate the spirit of sacrifice, obedience, and compassion embodied in Eid Al-Adha, I pray that Allah SWT accepts our sacrifices, grants us peace in our homes, and blesses our community with good health and unity.

Mental Health Matters This Sallah and Beyond.

Eid is a time for reflection, connection, and gratitude. It is also a reminder that our well-being is holistic—body, mind, and spirit. In the midst of celebrations, many individuals quietly struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, and other mental health challenges. Stigma often prevents people from seeking help early.

I therefore use this occasion to call on all of us—families, community leaders, religious leaders, and the public—to take mental health seriously:

1. *Check on one another*: A simple conversation can make a difference for someone struggling in silence.
2. *Seek help early*: Mental illness is a medical condition, not a curse or weakness. Early intervention improves outcomes significantly.
3. *Support those in care*: Recovery is possible with the right treatment, support, and understanding.
4. *Prioritize self-care*: Rest, healthy relationships, spirituality, and professional help when needed are all part of staying mentally well.

The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Dawanau, Kano, remains committed to providing accessible, compassionate, and evidence-based mental health care to all who need it. Our doors are open, and our team is here to serve you and your loved ones with dignity and respect.

May this Eid Al-Adha bring healing, hope, and renewed commitment to caring for our minds as much as our bodies.

Eid Mubarak.

PRESS RELEASE

Salute to the Workers of FNP Hospital Dawanau

Fellow colleagues,

Today, as we join the world in commemorating Workers’ Day, I extend my deepest gratitude and respect to every member of staff of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Dawanau.

Our work is not ordinary. Each day, you bring skill, compassion, and resilience to the care of persons with mental health conditions. From the nurses who hold the night shift with vigilance, to the psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, pharmacists, lab scientists, cleaners, security personnel, administrators, and all support staff – you are the backbone of this institution.

In the last year, your dedication has helped us expand services, reduce patient waiting times, and maintain essential services despite economic challenges. That progress bears your fingerprints.

On this May Day, management reaffirms its commitment to your welfare, professional growth, and a safe, dignified workplace. We will continue to engage staff unions constructively, prioritize training, and improve conditions within available resources.

To our workers: thank you. Your labor heals, restores hope, and upholds the dignity of those we serve. Nigeria’s health system stands because you stand at your post.

I wish you and your families a peaceful and reflective Workers’ Day. May we return with renewed purpose to serve.

Solidarity forever.

Signed,

Dr. Prof. Auwalu Sani Salihu,

Medical Director,

Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Dawanau, Kano.
