Advancing maternal health and childcare in Nigeria, African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) showcased its growing contribution to public health research, policy translation, health systems strengthening and innovation during a high-level engagement with representatives of the Gates Foundation at Bayero University Kano (BUK).

Gates Foundation delegation acknowledged ACEPHAP's progress in moving innovations from research to policy and eventually to implementation at scale. Mr. Ankur Vora, President Africa, India Offices & Chief Strategy Officer, during his remarks, commended the Centre's ability to move rapidly from innovation to policy and scale, while highlighting its emphasis on data, measurable impact and the training of the next generation of public health leaders.

Africa Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), through the Kano State Surveillance for Evidence and Policy (KASSEP) initiative, collaborated with the National Population Commission (NPC), Kano State Office, to conduct a four-day capacity-building training on electronic birth registration, maternal mortality surveillance and KASSEP dashboard data retrieval.

It was an intensive program that would spearhead a development in the population that will greatly reduce maternal and child mortality in the state.

During the session, the Director of ACEPHAP admitted that “Every child deserves to be recognized and documented from birth, and every maternal death must provide us with information that can help prevent another family from experiencing the same loss. Through this collaboration, we are strengthening the connection between data generation, evidence-based policy and action.”

The statement ignited powerful discussions throughout the 4-day program.

Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) convened key stakeholders for the TEAM-OB/NEO Implementation Playbook workshop, a strategic step toward improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in Nigeria.

Across two intensive days, participants engaged in collaborative sessions, group work, and expert-led discussions to design a practical, scalable playbook aligned with national EmONC standards. From planning and feedback to design, drafting, and finalisation, the workshop laid a clear roadmap for implementation.

Together, we are building solutions that translate evidence into action and ensure safer outcomes for mothers and newborns.

Ahead of the implementation of the Community Bundle Innovation Project, comprehensive capacity-building activities were successfully conducted by ACEPHAP, CCSI, and the IVAN team to strengthen maternal and newborn health services in Bodinga, Jega and Alleiro communities of Sokoto and Kebbi state.

The training brought together CHEWs, midwives, facility in-charges, representatives from General Hospital Bodinga, and members of the LGA health team to enhance their capacity in promoting skilled birth attendance, delivering quality maternal and newborn care, and ensuring timely referral of complications when necessary. Designed to address the high prevalence of home deliveries, the project seeks to increase access to skilled health worker support within communities and strengthen the continuum of care for mothers and newborns.

A major highlight of the training was the introduction of the Baby Shower concept by the IVAN team. Through stakeholder engagement and consensus, a culturally appropriate and locally acceptable name was adopted: “Zauren Mata Masu Juna Biyu.”

Together, we are taking important steps towards improving access to skilled birth attendance and quality maternal and newborn care in underserved communities.

After completing the E-MOTIVE training, Dr. Salawu Enebe, the CMD of Gaya General Hospital, is ready to turn knowledge into action. The training provided practical tools and insights to strengthen patient care and improve outcomes about managing post-partum haemorrhage.

Now, he plans to apply these learnings in his daily practice by enhancing teamwork, promoting timely interventions, and helping ensure every patient receives the best possible care.

Last month, Prof. Hadiza Shehu Galadanci, the Director of ACEPHAP alongside other healthcare professionals attended the Pre-eclaptic Summit in the capital city of Kigali, Rwanda.

Reports have shown that every year, 6 million women experience pre-eclampsia.

Mothers in low and middle income countries like Nigeria, experience this challenge severely with about 98% of deaths recorded due to hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

Together, they discussed innovative ways to end preventable deaths from pre-eclamsia.
