THE STORY OF JIBRIN GODWIN, AN EXCEPTIONAL WHO COMBINES MEDICAL STUDIES WITH MASTERS...

Someone running a Master’s degree while in medical school?

Sounds like a recipe for stress right? 😂

At least, that is what people usually think when I tell them.

My name is Jibrin Godwin. I’m a 400-level medical student, and I recently completed my third-semester examinations for my Master’s in Public Health (MPH).

For those who may not be familiar with Public Health, it is basically about preventing diseases, keeping communities healthy, and improving how healthcare is delivered to people.

So, how did I end up doing a Master’s degree while studying medicine?

Let me take you back.

Growing up, my biggest dream was to become a doctor.

Unfortunately, there was no medical school in my state at the time. So I packed my bags, moved to Kogi State University (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and studied Microbiology.

Four years later, I graduated with my BSc.

But becoming a doctor was still the dream.

I eventually returned to pursue medicine, not because of money, status, or pressure from anyone. I simply wanted to fulfil that childhood dream and serve people through medicine.

Then, while in medical school, I started thinking:

“Medical school is a long journey. I already have a background in Microbiology, and I’ll be spending several years here. Why not use this time to also study Public Health?”

It sounded a little crazy at first. 😂

But when I looked at the medical school curriculum, it actually made sense.

We will study Community Medicine throughout medical school, and there is a strong connection between Community Medicine and Public Health.

So I decided to give it a shot.

I chose Miva Open University because their flexible structure looked reassuring for me to study alongside medical school.

But let me correct one assumption about online education:

Online does not mean easy.

My experience at Miva has been anything but easy.

The coursework is demanding. The exams require you to think deeply and show that you actually understand what you’re learning.

Trying to keep up with medical school lectures, lab sessions, tests and exams while also handling my MPH courses has definitely tested me and continues to test me every time.

There were days when my brain simply said: Guy you mumu oh! 😂

But somehow, I kept going.

Would I do it again?

Honestly, yes.

Not because it has been easy, but because I’ve learnt a lot from the experience.

Balancing medical school and a Master’s degree has taught me discipline, time management, resilience, and perhaps most importantly, that your journey does not always have to follow the conventional path.

It has been one of the most unusual decisions I’ve made in my education so far, and I’m glad I made it.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Nine attempts at gaining admission into the medical school and becoming a medical doctor.

So I kept writing JAMB and Direct Entry, that even as a student in the university, I was still writing jamb and switching from one course of study to another just to get medicine.

Within these years (from 2009 to 2021),

I got admission into a BSc course.

Graduated.

Went to NYSC.

And worked for over 6 years in Lagos.

Life was moving on.

And yet, that dream refused to die.

There were many times I tried to let it go.

I told myself, “You need money now. You’re already a graduate. Why go back to school?”

I tried to convince myself that perhaps it was over.

I told myself to focus on business and build a life around the path I had already taken.

But somehow, I remained restless.

Deep down, I knew there was unfinished business.

It was more than just a career ambition.

It was a promise I had quietly made to myself and to my late father while I nursed him during his blind days in the village.

I had promised myself and my late father that I will become a medical doctor, become an eye surgeon and recoup whatever his eye problems have cost us as a family.

And so for many years I couldn't sleep. My inner man insisted that I must go back to my dream and the promise I made to my late father.

Today, I thank God for giving me the grace to carry on.

I thank God that I tried one more time.

And today, I am here in medical school, just counting months to finish.

I don't know who will read this today, but please don't give up.

Try again.

And if necessary, try one more time.

Because sometimes, winners are simply people who refused to stop trying.

My story is still unfolding.

But one thing I know for sure is:

Hope Beckons.

2024 — My first real encounter with UTME.
I had just finished secondary school, and honestly, I didn’t really understand how competitive Medicine & Surgery at the University of Ibadan was.

I just knew I wanted to study Medicine.

I wrote my first UTME and scored 292. I was happy with the score, thinking I had done quite well.

Then came PUTME. I scored 67, giving me an aggregate of 70.

The cut-off for Medicine & Surgery was 78.125.

That was when I really understood what people meant when they said UI MBBS is tough and highly competitive. 😭

I didn't make it.

Instead, I was transferred to Forestry and Forest Management.

Looking back, I can't even say I fully understood what was happening at the time. I was just a fresh secondary school graduate trying to figure out university admissions and chasing the course I wanted.

But 2024 taught me something important:

Wanting something badly doesn't automatically make it easy.

Sometimes, you have to learn the game, understand the competition, improve yourself and try again.

And that was just the beginning of my UTME journey. 🥹❤️‍🩹

Like Father Like Daughter.

Taraba's finest medical Dr. that once lived was Dr. Usman Abba Tukur (Dr. Manu). General hospital is what it's, due to his relentless sacrifices. He left a family mourning not only his demise, but medical knowledge he acquired that was beneficial to our whole Ummah.

God heard the plea of the family. 19 years later, his last daughter will today 18/August/2026 take an Oath & her induction ceremony of becoming a Medical Doctor from most prestigious Nigeria's Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Dr. Hajara Usman Abba Tukur, to one of the brightest, smartes & finest Umaru Abba Tukur's. God has blessed us with another medical practitioner in the family. May what you have over the years acquired today be beneficial to all of us.
