Did you know oral s*x can lead to more than just pleasure?
Oral gonorrhea is a silent but serious STI that often goes unnoticed.
Here’s everything you need to know to protect yourself and your partner 😓
👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
🔑 What is Oral Gonorrhea?
Oral gonorrhea is a s*xually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae 🦠. It infects the throat and often goes unnoticed because many people don't have symptoms.
Sadly, even without symptoms, it can still be transmitted and cause problems.
How can you contract it?
The major means is through oral s*x with someone who has gonorrhea. This can happen whether the infection is in the mouth, throat, or ge****ls.
Even if the infected person has no symptoms, the infection can still be passed on.
Note: kissing or sharing food is not a common way of spreading this infection.
🔑 What are the Symptoms
The thing is, most people don’t show any symptoms, which is why it’s often called a “silent” infection 🫢
When symptoms do appear, they can include:
- Sore throat
- Redness in the throat
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Pain when swallowing
- Occasionally, there may be white spots on the tonsils or throat These symptoms are often mistaken for a regular cold or strep throat, making it easy to overlook the real cause.
🔑 Why should you care?
Even though it’s often mild, oral gonorrhea can still be serious. If left untreated, it can lead to ongoing throat infections that are uncomfortable and difficult to treat.
In rare cases, it can spread to other parts of your body, including the blood, joints, or heart, causing more severe health problems.
🔑 How can you know you got it?
The only way to know for sure if you have oral gonorrhea is through testing. Don’t self diagnose 🤧
Your medic can diagnose it with a simple throat swab that is sent to a lab. If you’ve had oral s*x and notice symptoms, or if you’re at risk, it’s a good idea to get tested.
Regular STI screenings are important if you are s*xually active 👍🏼
🔑 How is it treated?
Oral gonorrhea is treatable with antibiotics.
It's crucial to take the full course of medication as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better to prevent Antimicrobial resistance
Some strains of gonorrhea are becoming resistant to certain antibiotics, which can make treatment more complicated. Follow-up testing after treatment may be necessary to ensure the infection is fully cleared.
🔑 What if you decide to ignore it?
If left untreated, oral gonorrhea can cause complications like:
- non stop throat infections
- higher risk of transmitting the infection to others
- Potential spread of the infection to other parts of the body
- Increased risk of contracting other STIs, including HIV, due to compromised body system
🔑 How to prevent Oral Gonorrhea
- Using protection, like dental dams, during oral s*x, it can significantly reduce your risk of getting or spreading gonorrhea.
- It’s also important to get regular STI tests, especially if you have multiple partners or engage in unprotected s*x.
- Open communication with your partner(s) about s*xual health and testing is important to preventing STIs.
