MAMAS, PLEASE DON’T FORGET YOUR PROTEIN DURING PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is not just about eating more food. Your body is doing a lot of work, and protein is one of the nutrients it needs.

Protein helps your baby grow and develop properly, including the growth of important tissues and muscles. It also supports the growth of the placenta and helps your own body build and repair tissues as pregnancy progresses.

So please, don’t let your meals be mostly rice, bread, garri, noodles and other carbohydrates.

Try to add protein to your meals.

Eggs.
Beans.
Fish.
Chicken or other lean meat.
Milk and yoghurt.
Groundnuts and other nuts.
Lentils and other legumes.

You don’t have to eat everything on this list. Just make sure protein has a place in your daily meals.

A balanced pregnancy diet is not about eating expensive foods. It is about getting the nutrients both you and your baby need.

ONE EGG A DAY IN PREGNANCY: WHAT CAN IT DO FOR YOU?

Mamas, eggs are one of those simple foods that can give you quite a lot nutritionally during pregnancy.

If you enjoy eggs and they are safe for you to eat, one well-cooked egg can be a good addition to your pregnancy diet.

Here are some of the benefits:

1. It gives you protein
Protein is important during pregnancy because your body needs it to support your growing baby and the changes happening in your own body.

2. It contains choline
Choline is an important nutrient during pregnancy and supports your baby’s brain and nervous system development.

3. It provides vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is needed for healthy red blood cell formation and normal nervous system function.

4. It contains iodine and selenium
These are important nutrients that support normal thyroid function and other processes in the body.

5. It contains vitamin D
Eggs can contribute to your vitamin D intake, although the amount is not enough to meet your entire pregnancy requirement.

6. It can be an easy, filling food
Eggs can be combined with other healthy foods to make a simple, balanced meal, especially when pregnancy has made you too tired to prepare anything complicated.

But please, mamas, one egg is not a magic pregnancy food.

You still need a varied diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains or other carbohydrate foods, healthy fats and other protein sources.

And please make sure your egg is properly cooked, with both the white and yolk firm, to reduce the risk of foodborne infection.

So if you love eggs, enjoy them as part of a balanced pregnancy diet.

One egg can be small, but nutritionally, it brings quite a lot to the table.

DIAPER RASH IN BABIES: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Mamas, that red, sore-looking bum can really make a baby uncomfortable.

Diaper rash is very common, especially when your baby’s skin stays wet for too long or comes in contact with urine or stool.

So, what can you do?

1. Change the diaper often
Don’t leave your baby in a wet or dirty diaper for too long. Once baby passes stool, change the diaper as soon as you can.

2. Clean gently
Use clean water and a soft cloth or gentle wipes. Please don’t scrub the skin because it is already irritated.

3. Dry the area properly
After cleaning, gently pat the skin dry. You can also leave the diaper off for a few minutes when possible to allow the skin to air.

4. Use a barrier cream
A zinc oxide cream or plain petroleum jelly can help protect the skin from moisture and further irritation.

5. Avoid putting random things on the rash
Mamas, please avoid methylated spirit, antiseptics, toothpaste, herbs, powders and any cream you are not sure about. Some of these can irritate your baby’s skin even more.

6. Don’t make the diaper too tight
A little room can help reduce rubbing and allow some air around the area.

And please pay attention to the rash.

If it is becoming severe, spreading, has blisters, sores, pus or bleeding, your baby has a fever or seems unwell, or the rash is not improving after a few days of proper care, please get your baby checked.

Sometimes what looks like an ordinary diaper rash may actually be a yeast infection or another skin condition that needs specific treatment.

Diaper rash is common, but your baby does not have to remain uncomfortable.

Keep the area clean, dry and protected, and don’t forget that sometimes the best thing you can do is have your baby examined.

YOUR BABY IS TEETHING AND HAS BECOME SO FUSSY? TRY THESE.

Teething can make babies uncomfortable, clingy, restless and more irritable than usual.

Here are some simple things you can do to help your baby:

1. Give them something cool to chew.
A clean, cool teething ring or a clean damp washcloth can help soothe the gums. Don’t freeze it solid.

2. Massage the gums.
Wash your hands properly and gently rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger.

3. Keep wiping the drool.
Teething can come with plenty drooling. Gently wipe your baby’s face and neck regularly to prevent the skin from getting irritated.

4. Give your baby extra comfort.
Sometimes they just want to be held, cuddled and reassured. Breastfeeding can also be comforting for babies who breastfeed.

5. If your baby is already eating solids, offer safe age-appropriate foods.
Some babies enjoy chewing on suitable foods when supervised. Make sure the food is prepared in a way that reduces choking risk.

And please, mamas, be careful with what you put in your baby’s mouth.

No alcohol or spirits on the gums.
No herbal mixtures.
No unapproved teething remedies.
No teething necklaces or bracelets.

And don’t automatically blame every symptom on teething.

Teething may cause gum discomfort, drooling, fussiness and changes in feeding or sleep, but a temperature of 38°C or higher is a fever and should not simply be dismissed as teething.

If your baby has a fever, is unusually sleepy, refusing feeds, having difficulty breathing, vomiting repeatedly, having diarrhoea, or just doesn’t look well, please get the baby assessed.

Teething is uncomfortable, but you don’t have to try every remedy you hear from people around you.

PREGNANCY DANGER SIGNS YOU SHOULD NEVER IGNORE

Mamas, pregnancy comes with plenty of changes, and not every discomfort means something is wrong.

But there are some symptoms you should never sit at home and watch.

Please seek urgent medical attention if you have:

1. VG bleeding
Especially heavy bleeding, bleeding with pain, or bleeding later in pregnancy.

2. Severe abdominal pain
Especially pain that is sudden, severe or does not go away.

3. Severe headache or changes in your vision
Especially when accompanied by swelling, upper abdominal pain or high blood pressure.

4. Your baby’s movements have reduced or changed
If your baby is moving less than usual, don’t wait until the next day or your next antenatal appointment. Get assessed.

5. Fluid leaking from the VG
Especially before you are due, as this could mean your waters have broken.

6. Convulsions or loss of consciousness
This is an emergency.

7. Difficulty breathing or chest pain
Please seek urgent care.

8. High fever or feeling seriously unwell
Fever during pregnancy should not simply be dismissed.

9. Severe swelling of the face or hands
Especially if it comes with headache, vision changes or other symptoms.

10. You feel something is seriously wrong
Mamas, trust your instincts. If you feel that something is not right, get checked.

Please don’t wait for someone to tell you, “It is normal in pregnancy.”

Some pregnancy complications can become serious very quickly, and getting assessed early can make a difference.

When in doubt, get checked.

17/09/2026

“MILK CAME OUT OF MY BABY’S NOSE!”

Mamas, should you panic?

I know it can be very scary to see, especially when it happens for the first time. But don’t panic immediately.

Babies can sometimes bring milk back up after feeding, and because their nose and mouth are connected, some of that milk can come out through the nose.

It can happen when baby drinks too quickly, takes more milk than the stomach can comfortably hold, swallows a lot of air, or spits up after feeding.

If your baby is breathing normally, has a normal colour, settles afterwards and continues feeding well, there is usually no reason to panic.

Just gently clean the milk from around the nose and mouth. Don’t put your finger or any object deep inside the baby’s nose.

But mamas, pay attention to baby’s breathing. If baby is struggling to breathe, turns blue, becomes unusually weak or difficult to wake, keeps choking, or is repeatedly vomiting, please seek medical attention immediately.

So yes, it can look frightening, but milk coming out of your baby’s nose does not automatically mean your baby is choking or in danger.

Watch baby, stay calm, and know when it is time to get help.

LET’S TALK ABOUT ERB’S PALSY, MAMAS

Have you ever seen a newborn whose one arm seems weaker than the other, or the baby is not moving one arm properly?

One of the things doctors may check for is Erb’s palsy.

Erb’s palsy is a nerve injury that can happen around the time of birth. It affects the nerves that control movement and feeling in part of the baby’s arm.

You may notice that the baby:

• Is not moving one arm as much as the other
• Keeps one arm in a different position
• Has difficulty moving the shoulder or elbow
• Has a weaker grip on that side

It can happen when the nerves around the baby’s neck and shoulder are stretched during birth. It is more likely with certain difficult deliveries, especially when there is difficulty delivering the baby’s shoulders.

But mamas, not every baby who is not moving one arm has Erb’s palsy.

That is why it is important to have the baby properly examined rather than trying to diagnose the problem at home.

Some babies recover very well as the nerves heal. Others may need physiotherapy, specialist follow-up or additional treatment depending on the extent of the injury.

So if you notice that your newborn is not moving one arm normally, please don’t ignore it or wait for someone to tell you that the baby will “outgrow it.”

Get the baby assessed.

Early assessment helps determine what is actually wrong and what should be done next.

And please remember, mamas, this is not something you should try to massage, pull or exercise aggressively at home.

Let a healthcare professional assess the baby first.

SIGNS YOUR BODY IS HEALING WELL AFTER CHILDBIRTH

Mamas, childbirth is a lot for the body.

Whether you had a VG or a C-section, your body needs time to recover. And healing doesn’t happen overnight.

Some signs that your recovery is generally progressing well include:

1. Your postpartum bleeding gradually reduces
Lochia is normal after birth, and it should generally become lighter and change in colour as the days and weeks pass.

2. Your pain is gradually getting better
You may still have some soreness, especially around the va**na, perineum or C-section wound, but the discomfort should generally improve rather than keep getting worse.

3. Your C-section wound or stitches are healing
The area should gradually look better, with no increasing redness, swelling, pus or worsening pain.

4. Your body is becoming more comfortable with movement
Walking, sitting, getting in and out of bed and doing your usual gentle activities should gradually become easier.

5. Your uterus is going back to its pre-pregnancy size
Your tummy may still look pregnant for a while. That’s completely normal. Your uterus doesn’t immediately return to its previous size after delivery.

6. Your VG or perineal discomfort is improving
If you had a tear or episiotomy, soreness should gradually settle as the area heals.

7. Your energy slowly starts returning
You may still be very tired, especially with a newborn, but you should gradually feel more like yourself.

But mamas, healing well does not mean you must feel completely normal after a few days.

Your body has just gone through pregnancy and childbirth. Give it time.

And please don’t ignore warning signs such as heavy bleeding, fever, worsening pain, foul-smelling va**nal discharge, difficulty breathing, severe headache or vision changes, chest pain, or a wound that is becoming increasingly red, swollen or painful.

Those are reasons to seek medical care.

Rest when you can, eat well, stay hydrated and attend your postpartum checks.

Your body has done something major. Give it the time and care it deserves.

16/09/2026

MAMAS, YOUR VG IS SELF-CLEANSING. YOU DON’T NEED TO WASH INSIDE IT.

Please, you don’t need to put soap, antiseptic, herbs, or any other product inside your VG to make it “clean.”

Your VG has its own natural way of cleaning itself, and normal discharge is part of that process.

What you need to wash is the outside, the v***a. Keep the area clean with water. If you use soap, choose a mild, unscented one and use it externally.

Please don’t do**he or put things inside your VG because you want to remove an odour.

If you notice a strong unusual smell, itching, burning, pain, or a change in your discharge, don’t try to wash it away. Get checked, because it could be an infection that needs proper treatment.

Your VG does not need perfume to be healthy.
