WORLD HEPATITIS DAY
28 JULY
Let's talk about Hepatitis...
What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections. If left untreated, it can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer. Early detection and treatment can save lives.
Types of Viral Hepatitis: Hepatitis A
Spread through contaminated food or water; preventable with vaccination.
Hepatitis B
Spread through infected blood, unprotected s*x, and from mother to child during childbirth; preventable with vaccination.
Hepatitis C
Spread mainly through infected blood; curable with appropriate treatment, but there is currently no vaccine.
Hepatitis D
Occurs only in people already infected with Hepatitis B.
Hepatitis E
Usually spread through contaminated water and is more common in areas with poor sanitation.
Common Signs and Symptoms:
• Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
• Dark urine
• Pale or clay-coloured stools
• Persistent fatigue
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea and vomiting
• Abdominal pain, especially on the right side
• Joint pain
Some people with hepatitis may have no symptoms, especially in the early stages. That's why regular testing is important.
Protect Yourself:
* Get vaccinated (Hepatitis A & B)
* Practice good hand hygiene
* Avoid sharing needles, razors, or other sharp objects
* Practice safe s*x
* Ensure blood products are screened
* Get tested if you think you may have been exposed
* Seek medical care early if you develop symptoms
Get tested. Get treated. Get protected.
