As we celebrate our nation's democratic journey, let us remember that a strong nation is built by healthy, safe, and empowered people.

📊 STAGES OF ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY (KDIGO CLASSIFICATION)
ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY (AKI): PART 3

AKI is classified into three stages.
🟡 STAGE 1
Mild AKI
Kidney function begins to decline.
Urine output may reduce slightly.
Often reversible.

🟠 STAGE 2
Moderate AKI
More significant rise in creatinine.
Symptoms become more noticeable.
Requires close monitoring.

🔴 STAGE 3
Severe AKI
Marked loss of kidney function.
May require:
✔ Intensive Care
✔ Dialysis
✔ Specialist nephrology care
This stage carries a higher risk of complications.

💊 TREATMENT OF AKI
Treatment depends on the cause.
General Measures
✔ Correct dehydration
✔ Treat infections promptly
✔ Stop harmful medications
✔ Manage blood pressure
✔ Monitor fluid balance
✔ Correct electrolyte abnormalities
Severe Cases
May require:
🩺 Dialysis
Dialysis temporarily performs the filtering work of the kidneys until recovery occurs.

📖 A REAL-LIFE LESSON
A middle-aged man developed severe malaria and persistent vomiting. Believing it would resolve on its own, he delayed seeking treatment.
Within days, he stopped passing urine and developed swelling and breathlessness.
At the hospital, he was diagnosed with Acute Kidney Injury and required emergency dialysis.
Fortunately, after treatment, his kidneys recovered.
The lesson:
Early treatment can prevent life-threatening complications.

ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY (AKI): PART 2
CLASSIFICATION OF ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY
AKI is commonly classified into:

1️⃣ PRERENAL AKI
(Problem Before the Kidney)
This occurs when insufficient blood reaches the kidneys.
The kidneys themselves may initially be normal.
Causes:
🔹 Severe dehydration
🔹 Excessive vomiting
🔹 Severe diarrhoea
🔹 Severe bleeding
🔹 Burns
🔹 Shock
🔹 Heart failure
🔹 Severe infection (sepsis)
Important Fact:
Prerenal AKI is often reversible if treated early.

2️⃣ INTRARENAL (INTRINSIC) AKI
(Problem Inside the Kidney)
This occurs when kidney tissues become damaged.
Causes:
🔹 Acute Tubular Necrosis (ATN)
🔹 Severe infections
🔹 Certain medications
🔹 Toxic herbal preparations
🔹 Contrast dyes used in some scans
🔹 Autoimmune diseases
🔹 Glomerulonephritis
🔹 Uncontrolled hypertension
Result:
The kidney cells become injured and cannot function properly.

3️⃣ POSTRENAL AKI
(Problem After the Kidney)
This occurs when urine flow becomes blocked.
The kidneys continue producing urine, but it cannot leave the body properly.
Causes:
🔹 Enlarged prostate
🔹 Kidney stones
🔹 Bladder tumours
🔹 Urethral obstruction
🔹 Pelvic cancers
Good News:
Many postrenal causes can be corrected if identified early.

⚠ COMMON CAUSES OF ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY
✓Dehydration: Not drinking enough water during severe illness.
✓Severe Infection (Sepsis): One of the leading causes worldwide.
✓Excessive Use of Painkillers
Particularly:
🔹 Ibuprofen
🔹 Diclofenac
🔹 Naproxen
🔹 Other NSAIDs
✓ Herbal Mixtures: Many unregulated herbal products contain substances toxic to the kidneys.
✓ Uncontrolled Hypertension: Can impair kidney blood supply.
✓ Severe Blood Loss: Following accidents, childbirth complications, or surgery.
✓ Urinary Tract Obstruction: Preventing urine drainage.

🚨 SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AKI
Symptoms may vary depending on severity.

🔹 Reduced urine output

🔹 Fatigue
🔹 Weakness
🔹 Loss of appetite
🔹 Nausea
Progressive Symptoms
🔹 Swollen feet
🔹 Swollen face
🔹 Difficulty breathing

Severe Symptoms
🚨 Chest pain
🚨 Severe shortness of breath
🚨 Seizures
🚨 Coma
These require urgent medical attention.
