VISION ROBBERY!!

That brief relief you feel when you rub your eyes during itching or discomfort?
It’s deceptive. It feels good in the moment—but it may be quietly stealing from your sight.

Eye rubbing might seem harmless, but over time it can:
• Damage the delicate surface of your eyes
• Increase the risk of infections by transferring dirt and bacteria
• Worsen irritation and allergies instead of relieving them
• Lead to serious conditions that affect your vision long-term

The eye is not built for pressure. Every time you rub, you’re applying force to a very sensitive structure that needs protection, not friction.

What feels like relief can actually be slow destruction.

Instead of rubbing:
✔ Rinse your eyes with clean water
✔ Use proper eye drops if needed
✔ Rest your eyes, especially from screens
✔ Seek medical help if irritation persists

Discipline in small habits protects your future.
Guard your eyes. Guard your vision.

Because not all comfort is safe… and not all relief is harmless.

PERILS OF SELF MEDICATION:

The eyes are delicate organs, yet they are often treated carelessly. When discomfort such as itching, redness, pain, tearing, or blurred vision occurs, many people resort to self-medication—using old prescriptions, over-the-counter drops, herbal mixtures, or advice from friends. While this may seem convenient, it can be dangerous and even lead to permanent vision loss.

1. Wrong Diagnosis, Wrong Treatment
Eye discomfort has many causes—dry eye, infection, allergy, glaucoma, injury, or refractive errors. Treating without proper examination can worsen the actual condition. For example, using antibiotic drops for a non-infectious problem or steroids for an undiagnosed infection can cause serious harm.

2. Risk of Vision Loss
Certain eye drops, especially steroid-containing ones, can increase eye pressure, cause cataracts, or worsen infections when used incorrectly. Prolonged misuse may result in irreversible damage and blindness.

3. Masking Serious Eye Conditions
Self-medication may temporarily reduce symptoms but hide underlying diseases like glaucoma, corneal ulcers, or retinal problems. By the time professional care is sought, the damage may already be advanced.

4. Eye Infections and Contamination
Using expired drugs, sharing eye drops, or applying non-sterile substances (such as herbal extracts or saliva) increases the risk of eye infections, corneal damage, and severe inflammation.

5. Drug Resistance and Delayed Healing
Improper use of antibiotics can lead to resistance, making future infections harder to treat. Some medications can also slow healing when used without supervision.

6. Financial and Emotional Cost
What starts as a “small irritation” can turn into repeated clinic visits, expensive treatments, emotional distress, and loss of productivity—all of which could have been avoided with early professional care.

Safe Eye Care Practices

••Avoid using eye drops without professional advice
••Never use old or shared prescriptions
••Do not put herbal or home remedies into the eyes
••Seek prompt care from an optometrist or ophthalmologist when discomfort persists
••Have regular eye examinations, even when symptoms seem mild.

Always Remember
Your eyes are not a trial-and-error zone.
Self-medication may offer temporary relief, but professional eye care protects your sight for a lifetime.

For office workers—especially those who spend long hours in front of computer screens—regular eye checks are important for both vision health and early detection of problems like digital eye strain, dry eyes, or uncorrected refractive errors.

General guidelines:

Every 2 years: Adults under 40 with no symptoms or eye health risk factors.

Every year: Adults aged 40 and above, or those with risk factors (family history of glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, wearing glasses/contact lenses).

Sooner / as needed: If you experience blurred vision, headaches, double vision, eye strain, or difficulty focusing on screens.

Extra tips for office workers:

Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Adjust screen brightness, contrast, and posture to reduce strain.

Consider anti-reflective coatings or computer glasses if recommended by an optometrist.
