THE MISTAKE OF NOT PUTTING BABY TO BREAST IN THE FIRST 1–2 WEEKS

The first days and weeks after birth are not the time to “wait for the milk to come properly” before putting your baby to breast.

Many mothers worry that their breast milk is not enough because only small amounts of colostrum come out. But that small, thick, yellowish milk is exactly what your newborn needs in those first days.
When you delay breastfeeding or give frequent substitutes instead, your baby sucks less at the breast. This can reduce the stimulation your breasts need to establish a good milk supply.

The more effectively baby breastfeeds, the more your body gets the message to produce milk.
So, unless there is a medical reason why breastfeeding is not possible, put your baby to breast early and frequently, including during those first 1–2 weeks breastmilk is not coming out very well.

And please remember: a newborn breastfeeding frequently does not automatically mean your milk is insufficient. Newborns have small stomachs and often feed many times a day.

Blocked nose in Babies

It’s normal for babies and young kids to get blocked noses, their tiny nasal passages make it easy for congestion to build up.

Most blockages come from everyday viral infections, like colds. Things like smoke, dry indoor air, or strong scents can make it worse. Allergies also become more common once kids are older than two or three.
Most times depending on the severity blocked nose resolves with or without medications.

Some ways to resolve it
1. Steam inhalation
2. Saline drop
3. Hydration
4. Suctioning
5. Moisture therapy
6. Medications in severe cases.

*Gastro-colic reflex*

When a baby sharply pulls away from the breast or bottle, fidgets, grunts, passes some gas or a p**p and then returns to feeding, this is due to the gastro-colic reflex. This is normal infant behavior.
Feeding stimulates the gastro-colic reflex, which triggers an urge to p**p. Sometimes a baby will p**p, sometimes pass gas, other times there will be nothing to show for his efforts. When observed during feeding this reflex is often mistaken as a sign of pain.

Hypersensitivity of the gastro-colic reflex, which presents as frequent spasms which occur in waves that continue on and off for hours, is one of the many theories on causes of infant colic in babies younger than 4 months.

The number of times a newborn poo is likely not a major concern, however the texture or how the poo looks like matters.

Once a baby's poo is not egusi-like, it's a concern.

What is fetal distress?

Fetal distress describes a condition when the fetus(baby in the womb) shows signs of distress(usually through abnormal heart beat) during late pregnancy or labor. Most healthcare providers have replaced the term fetal distress with non-reassuring fetal status (NRFS).

There are many reasons why the fetus could show signs of distress, such as labor, reactions to medications or issues with the umbilical cord or placenta. Fetal distress can be dangerous and cause complications for both you and the fetus. Your doctor and midwives look for signs of distress as part of your antenatal care.

There are several signs that mean labour might be starting, these are the most common signs:

- contractions or tightenings
- a "show", when the plug of mucus from your cervix (entrance to your womb, or uterus) comes away
- backache
- an urge to go to the toilet, which is caused by your baby's head pressing on your bowel
- your waters breaking

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO US.

*How to differentiate between false and real labour*

During the final weeks of pregnancy, you may have contractions. But these contractions don't really signal the start of labor. These cramps are called false labor, or Braxton Hicks contractions.

Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular. They don't get closer together. They often go away when you walk around, rest, or change position. Contractions due to real labor tend to be regular, get closer together, get stronger, and continue even with position changes, rest, or movement.

To tell real labor from false labor, time the length of your contractions. This is the time from the start of one contraction to the start of the next contraction. Also note the time between them.

*GESTATIONAL DIABETES*

This is a health condition whereby hormones produced by placenta prevents the body from using insulin hormone effectively, thereby leading to glucose(sugar) build up in blood. Insulin is the hormone that helps the body to utilize glucose in the blood.

*Risk factors*
These are factors or conditions that may lead to this condition.
1. History of diabetes in the family
2. Overweight or obesity before pregnancy
3. Past history of gestational diabetes
4. Previous delivery of large baby( 4kg ans above)
5. History of abnormal glucose test
6. Change in hormonal level
7. Age ( from 25years and above)
8. PCOS ( polycystic ovarian syndrome

*Prevention and Management*
1. Eat healthy /avoid junks (low carbs diet, low sugar, low processed foods, high fibre, more proteinous food and water.
2. Keep active ( exercise). This helps to reduce the risk of this condtion.
3. Start pregnancy at healthy weight.
4. Register in a hospital with competent doctor or gynae.
5. Monitoring of the sugar level.( random/fasting blood sugar, glucose tolerance test, HB1ac or urinalysis can be done).
6. Drugs and insulin can be used.
7. Early delivery of the baby either by va**na or c/s depending on the age of pregnancy.

*Complications*
1. Breathing difficulties
2. Macrosomic(big) babies due to the the deposition of glucose to the fetus.
3. Neonatal hypoglycaemia due to drop in sugar level after birth.
4. Stillbirth ( after 20-28 weeks of pregnncy)
5. Stillborn ( death at birth or some minutes after)
