Instead of normal hemoglobin (HbA), the body produces abnormal hemoglobin (HbS). Under low oxygen conditions, these sickle-shaped cells can’t move as easily, leading to poor oxygen delivery, and they get stuck in blood vessels. This causes chronic pain, increased risk of infections, and organ damage. It’s more common in people of African, Mediterranean, or Middle Eastern descent. Early diagnosis, usually with a newborn screening, is key, and treatments focus on managing symptoms and preventing complications.
