ANAEMIA: KNOW THE SIGNS, TEST YOUR BLOOD, AND EAT RIGHT!

Feeling constantly tired, weak, dizzy, or unusually short of breath?

Anaemia could be one possible cause.

Anaemia occurs when the blood has too few healthy red blood cells or not enough haemoglobin to carry oxygen effectively around the body.

Causes include iron deficiency, poor nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, malaria and other infections, chronic diseases, heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, and inherited blood disorders.

Children, pregnant women and women who menstruate are particularly vulnerable.

LAB TESTS THAT CAN HELP

If anaemia is suspected, relevant tests may include:

• Full Blood Count (FBC/CBC) – checks haemoglobin, percentage of red blood cells/PCV, MCV and other blood parameters.
• Peripheral Blood Film (Blood Smear) – examines the size, shape and appearance of red blood cells.
• Serum Ferritin & Iron Studies – help assess iron stores and iron deficiency.
• Vitamin B12 & Folate tests – useful when vitamin deficiency is suspected.
• Screen for Malaria and other Chronic Diseases.
• Reticulocyte Count – helps assess how the bone marrow is producing red blood cells.
• Other tests may be recommended depending on the suspected cause.
