“ABEG, LEAVE THAT HEALTH TALK. WE ARE STILL YOUNG!”
Last December, four friends met at a naming ceremony.
As usual, the food was flowing. Jollof rice, fried rice, chicken, small chops, soft drinks. Nobody was counting anything. Everybody was enjoying themselves.
Then one of them, Kemi, refused the second bottle of soft drink someone offered her.
Her friend immediately noticed.
“Ah-ah, Kemi! Wetin happen? You don join people wey dey fear sugar?”
Everybody burst into laughter.
Kemi laughed too.
She explained that she was trying to reduce her sugar intake and pay more attention to what she ate.
One of her friends waved her hand dismissively.
“Abeg! We are still young. When we reach old age, we will start all those things. Enjoy your life!”
That statement ended the discussion.
They ate, gisted, took pictures and went home.
Three months later, the same group of friends met again.
This time, one of them had just returned from a medical check-up. Her doctor had advised her to pay closer attention to her blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
She was surprised.
She didn't smoke. She wasn't overweight. She went to work every day and rarely felt sick.
Yet, some of her health numbers needed attention.
When she shared the news with her friends, the group chat suddenly became quiet.
Then someone typed:
“So all this while, person fit dey look healthy and still get these things?”
Another replied:
“Honestly, when last did I even check my own blood pressure?”
And just like that, the jokes stopped.
You see, many of us don't deliberately neglect our health because we want to become sick.
We neglect it because we feel fine.
We postpone check-ups because we are busy. We ignore healthy habits because we think they are for older people. We assume that because we can work, dance, eat and laugh, everything must be fine.
But good health is not something we should start pursuing only when we notice a problem.
And before anyone misunderstands me, let me make something clear: you don't have to stop enjoying your favourite Nigerian foods to live a healthier life.
You can eat your rice. You can enjoy your swallow. You can attend parties and eat small chops.
The goal is to learn moderation, build balanced meals, stay physically active and pay attention to your health.
You don't need to wait until a doctor warns you before you start making better choices.
Now, answer me honestly.
Which of these sounds most like you?
A. I only go for a check-up when I'm sick.
B. I feel fine, so I don't see the need for regular checks.
C. I try to take care of my health, even when I'm not sick.
No judgment here. Let's talk!
