I’m not sure what’s more frightening: not using the most effective therapy for treating OCD when you have been trained to or misrepresenting it online. Exposure therapy is the s**t. If you want to learn more about it, go to the link in my bio and read my Substack articles and blogs.

I’m a clinical psychologist who specializes in OCD and anxiety disorders and I use exposure and response prevention (ERP) to treat it. Because it works. Because it’s evidence-based. Because decades of research support its effectiveness in reducing OCD symptoms. It’s called the gold standard for a reason. It’s the damn GOAT.
And no, ERP is not torture. It’s not inherently too exhausting, too demanding, or too much for people with OCD. Is poorly executed ERP potentially harmful? Absolutely. So is any therapy delivered incompetently. That’s an argument for better training and competent clinical care, not for misrepresenting the treatment itself.
Anxiety is not danger, discomfort is not damage, and treatment does not have to feel easy to be effective. We can acknowledge the challenges of ERP without fearmongering about the treatment with the strongest evidence base for OCD.
Let’s stop confusing this treatment can be done badly with this treatment is bad. And for the love of all things evidence-based, let’s stop scaring people away from a treatment that could help them get their lives back. K thanks 😘

Can mindfulness work for ocd? Yes, a bit. What about I-CBT? Yes, a bit. But Exposure therapy? It’s undeniably effective. Like really effective. Think of exposure as treating the “root cause” of ocd. This is why you need to ensure that if you have ocd, you’re working with a therapist that specializes in its clinical implementation. Not just CBT or mindfulness strategies. Go to International OCD Foundation to find a therapist who specializes in this treatment so you actually get the help you need.

TLDR: “There is a crisis in psychotherapy and it’s that ERP isn’t being used as much as it should be.” Let’s figure out how to better communicate about exposure therapy to the public. Let’s help clinicians get better education and training in ERP. But let’s not change the name to imply exposure therapy was somehow and ironically unsafe to begin with (it’s not).

You can do hard things. Comment SUBSTACK for more thoughts and details.

Because the internet usually doesn’t explain nuance: it could only be OCD if 1. You’re evaluated by a trained licensed mental health professional and meet the agreed upon criteria for the disorder and 2. these symptoms cause you a level of impairment in lots of areas of your life that are disrupting. If you think you may have OCD, don’t take a quiz that you found on TikTok or heed the advice of a person who “beat their ocd by doing what doctors never want you to know.” Please go to International OCD Foundation and find a trained professional to help 🫶🏼
For resources and information about OCD, you can also go to the link in my bio to read my blogs, Substack articles, and access paid offers for parents of kids with ocd.

I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Remember, if your therapist isn’t doing exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) for your ocd or anxiety disorder, you aren’t getting the most effective behavioral treatment there is for ocd. Is it hard? Yes. Is it weird? Sure can be. Will it help your ocd? It’s got the best chance, honestly. Go do your hard thing 🫶🏼

I know, I’m just as surprised as you. A diagnosis is not provided UNLESS your life becomes disrupted and impaired in a number of life domains due to the symptoms of that disorder (school, work, friends, etc.). So no, you don’t have OCD because you like your house to be clean and organized. But you *might* if you can’t leave the house unless the kitchen looks a certain way. Also, Andrew Huberman, Ph.D. isn’t a mental health professional so generally, don’t heed his advice on anything mental health. He just happened to be correct posting this (hallelujah).

If you’re a therapist looking to gain more clinical knowledge or insight about your clients with ocd, I opened up appointments for consultation that you can book on my website. The goal isn’t simply to tell you what to do in session. It’s to help you understand the clinical reasoning behind the recommendations and case conceptualization so you can apply those principles in your own practice. If you want some additional clinical support, comment CONSULT and I’ll send you the link 😎
