Join us this Saturday, September 5th, 2026, for the NAFFSC Support meeting. This event is expected to be both enlightening and entertaining, bringing together our close-knit sickle cell community to share insights, experiences, and support.

September is designated as Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and this meeting marks the official kickoff of a series of activities and programs that the Noah's Ark Foundation for Sickle Cell has planned to raise awareness and promote understanding of sickle cell disease.

We are eager to welcome everyone to join us this Saturday for this important gathering. If you or your organization would like to sponsor or donate, please feel free to contact us via our direct message or reach out to us on WhatsApp at 0803 528 9413. Your support is invaluable in our efforts to educate and assist those affected by sickle cell.

God bless us all!

For the rest of the world, September is just the start of the ember months, the transition into the final stretch of the year. But for us here in the sickle cell community, September is sacred.

It is 30 days carved out of the entire year to unapologetically take up space. It’s a month to shine the light on the quiet battles fought in midnight hospital rooms, the resilient warriors wrapped in heavy hoodies on freezing office floors, and the bold, necessary conversations we refuse to shy away from anymore.

SCD awareness month matters so much. But, awareness alone isn't enough anymore. We have to talk about sickle cell as a reality to master, a cycle to disrupt, and a future to protect. For too long, societal stigma, quiet whispers, and cultural denial have forced people to suffer in the dark. Too many families have walked blindly into generational heartbreaks simply because we were "too polite" to ask the uncomfortable questions early.

This September, we are changing that script.

We are moving away from just soothing the pain when it arrives, and we are stepping into the power of prevention, radical empathy, and unyielding truth.

September is here! Join us in raising awareness this month and beyond.

During a vaso-occlusive crisis, a complex series of events takes place within your body that leads to significant pain and tissue damage.

Red blood cells which normally transport oxygen efficiently, lose their oxygen supply and undergo a hape change, transforming from their round form into a sickle or crescent shape. These deformed, rigid, and sticky cells tend to stick together and to the walls of small blood vessels, forming clumps that obstruct normal blood flow.

This blockage prevents blood from reaching various tissues and organs, resulting in a lack of oxygen (ischemia) and causing tissues to become inflamed and damaged. The restricted blood flow also triggers a cascade of inflammatory responses, further exacerbating pain and tissue injury.

The pain experienced during a sickle cell crisis is often severe, characterized by aching, stabbing, or throbbing sensations that can persist for hours, days, or even weeks. This ongoing cycle of obstruction, inflammation, and pain constitutes a biological crisis in the vascular system, rooted in complex cellular and molecular mechanisms.

If you live with sickle cell disease, remember you are not alone; Like the NAFFSC, there are many supportive communities online willing to help and support you through these challenging episodes.
