Today is

First celebrated in 2005, the World Hypertension Day (WHD) is observed on the 17th of May every year.
The World Hypertension Day aims to promote public awareness of hypertension globally and encourages everyone to prevent and control Hypertension.
The WHD is an annual initiative of the World Hypertension League (WHL), an affiliated section of the International Society for Hypertension (ISH).

The theme of WHD 2016 is Know Your Numbers, with the goal of increasing high blood pressure awareness in all populations around the world.

Here are some very important points to remember:

- Hypertension is the leading risk factor for disease burden in developed countries.

- Hypertension is the #2 risk factor (after cigarette smoking) for disease burden in developing countries.

- Approximately 2 in 5 (that's 40%) adults have raised blood pressure, most of whom are not diagnosed until complications set in. These complications are very difficult and expensive to manage; some of these complications cause permanent disability and even death.

- Hypertension is the #1 cause of stroke and heart failure worldwide.

- Hypertension is the #2 cause of heart attack and kidney failure worldwide.

- Hypertension is easy to screen for.

- Effective lifestyle changes can help combat hypertension:

1. Eat a healthy diet with low amounts of salt. Stay away from fatty, processed and greasy foods.
2. STOP SMOKING!
3. Limit alcohol intake
4. Increase physical activity - more exercise!
5. Maintain a healthy weight
6. Speak with your doctor/health professional on ways of reducing your blood pressure levels if they remain persistently high.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS!

Normal blood pressure levels are at or below 120/80 mmHg.

If your blood pressure levels are between 120/80 and 139/89 mmHg, make healthy lifestyle changes (as listed above). Ensure you check your blood pressure at regular intervals.

If your blood pressure levels are greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg, check with healthcare provider - you might need to start taking prescribed medication immediately.

If you need more information, drop us a message - we'll be offering FREE blood pressure checks all week long at Renal Dialysis Centre.

Don't forget to

Your friends at RDC.
