Why go to the gym when you can mix therapy and gym activities together at home?

That 7kg dumbbell wasn’t just for a workout—it was incorporated into a therapy session with a purpose.

Here’s what this activity supports:

1. Shoulder strength – helping build the strength needed for everyday functional activities.

2. Upper-body posture – improving postural strength and stability needed for prolonged sitting at a desk.

3. Distal mobility and coordination – supporting steadiness and control needed for fine-motor activities such as writing and buttoning a shirt.

4. Energy regulation and readiness to learn – purposeful movement can help a child use their energy, regulate their body and prepare for more focused participation during learning activities.

Therapy can be functional, engaging and purposeful. Sometimes, movement is not a distraction from learning—it can be part of preparing the child for learning.

At Patrick Speech and Language Centre, we make therapy meaningful, functional and goal-oriented.
