PRESS RELEASE:

FTH LOKOJA AND CUSTECH TEACHING HOSPITAL SEAL LANDMARK PACT TO DEEPEN COLLABORATION ON MEDICAL TRAINING SERVICES.

Lokoja, Kogi State.

The Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (FTHL) and the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Teaching Hospital, Okene, have entered a formal partnership aimed at strengthening clinical instruction and broadening healthcare delivery across Kogi State.

The management of CUSTECH Teaching Hospital, led by its Chief Medical Director, Dr Shuaib Stephen Babatunde, paid a congratulatory and strategic advocacy visit to the Chief Medical Director of FTHL, Associate Professor Abdulrahman Ozovehe Shehu, at the Hospital’s Conference Room. Dr. Babatunde on behalf of the CUSTECHTH delegation, congratulated Assoc. Professor Shehu on his appointment and immediately steered discussions toward a concrete, time-bound partnership.

Assoc. Professor Shehu in his remarks charged CUSTECHTH to leverage FTHL’s deep reservoir of human resources, advanced facilities, and institutional data for medical and scientific research. He stressed that effective service delivery at FTHL would directly elevate the standards of CUSTECHTH and other state-owned hospitals, creating a unified ecosystem of quality healthcare, skills acquisition, professional training for all cadres, and improved welfare. Both institutions committed to delivering seamless clinical exposure, convenient learning environments, and shared institutional resources.

Additionally, the Institutions resolved to set up a joint committee within two weeks to finalize an MoU that will operationalize the medical school framework, and a strategic visit to the Kogi State Commissioner for Health will be undertaken to secure support and alignment.

The delegation was received by a high-powered FTHL team which included Dr. Ebune Sunday (Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee – CMAC), Dr. Patricia Medupin (Deputy CMAC), Alhaji Abdullah Abdulrahman (Ag. Director of Administration), and Dr Ododo Bernard. The CUSTECHTH CMD was accompanied on the visit by Dr. Sullyman (CUSTECHTH CMAC), Mrs. Saidu Rabiat (Head of Administration), and Mrs. Deborah Otaru (Head of Nursing Services).

PRESS RELEASE

FTH LOKOJA BOLSTERS MEDICAL SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP With FEDERAL UNIVERSITY, LOKOJA.

Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja is expanding its workforce and adopting a flexible deployment framework to drive the College of Health Sciences at Federal University Lokoja toward full accreditation and the training of its first medical graduates. These commitments were the centerpiece of a high-level meeting held on Tuesday, 19th May 2026, when the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Associate Professor Abdulrahman Ozovehe Shehu.

Professor Ibileye congratulated the CMD on his appointment and traced the university’s 15-year journey from three faculties to fourteen, now including a College of Health Sciences. He said FUL values its partnership with FTHL because of the hospital’s proven capacity and readiness to help the college meet its mandate. He outlined current hurdles—personnel movement, hostel accommodation, and the need for a renewable energy system to cut electricity costs—that require joint attention.

Responding, Assoc. Professor Shehu made it clear that running a medical school is a serious commitment that cannot succeed without a strong teaching hospital at its core. “No medical graduate can practice without MDCAN accreditation. Our priority is to meet every requirement together,” he said. The hospital has already mapped out critical gaps and stands ready to close them alongside the university.

Personnel deployment, the CMD explained, will be flexible. Some staff will be engaged directly by the university, while others may be seconded from the hospital, and vice versa. He commended the Vice Chancellor for seeking early clarity on the financial framework and service rank captured in the Memorandum of Understanding, stressing that accreditation will ultimately depend on readiness across all specialties. He assured the university of the hospital’s full availability at every step.

The CMD revealed that the hospital’s training plan covers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Medicine, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiology, and related disciplines. To support this, FTH Lokoja has secured approval to recruit new staff. Also, over twenty medical professionals have already confirmed interest in joining the college, with financial terms settled.

“Our next focus is building an enabling environment that allows this medical school to train large numbers of competent doctors,” the CMD stated. “Our hospital is fully aligned and prepared to fulfil its role in this partnership.”

The meeting reinforces a shared determination to produce quality set of medical graduates through deliberate investment in human resources, infrastructure, and inter-institutional collaboration.
