BSUTH BEGINS STAFF BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION EXERCISE

Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, on Thursday commenced a staff verification exercise through biometric authentication aimed at strengthening attendance monitoring and improving service delivery across the hospital.

The exercise, which covers both clinical and administrative staff, is designed to ensure compliance with official duties and identify workers attempting to evade the biometric attendance monitoring system already in operation at the hospital.

BSUTH THERAPEUTIC CENTRE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR OF HOPE FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Therapeutic Centre for Children with Special Needs at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital today marks its first anniversary, celebrating one year of dedicated care, rehabilitation and renewed hope for children living with developmental and neurological challenges in Benue State and beyond.

Established as a pioneering intervention facility within the hospital, the centre has become a refuge for families seeking specialised therapy and support for children with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, speech impairment, learning disabilities and other developmental disorders.

Within one year of operation, the centre has recorded remarkable progress through physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavioural support services aimed at improving the quality of life and social inclusion of affected children.

Parents and caregivers have continued to commend the professionalism and compassion demonstrated by the staff of the centre, noting that many children who previously struggled with communication, mobility and social interaction are now showing visible signs of improvement and confidence.

The success story of the centre has been largely attributed to the vision and commitment of Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, whose passion for inclusive healthcare and child development inspired the establishment of the facility.

Stakeholders in the health sector described Dr. Hwande as a strong advocate for vulnerable children, praising his determination to ensure that children with special needs receive professional attention and opportunities for improved living.

The Head of Administration of the centre, Mrs. Lois Terhemba Fasaa and other observers noted that, the initiative has not only filled a major healthcare gap in Benue State but has also reduced the burden on families who previously travelled long distances to access specialised therapeutic services outside the state.

Special commendation has also gone to the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his administration’s support towards strengthening healthcare delivery and encouraging innovative medical interventions at BSUTH.

Health professionals say the Governor’s commitment to the development of modern medical services in the state has created an enabling environment for specialised centres such as the therapeutic facility to thrive and impact lives positively.

As the centre celebrates its first anniversary, stakeholders have called for sustained investment, expansion of therapy units and increased public awareness to ensure that more children with special needs receive timely intervention and holistic care.

Families, health workers and well-wishers expressed optimism that the centre will continue to grow into a regional reference point for specialised child therapy and rehabilitation services in Nigeria.

DR. IJIKO CELEBRATES MIRACULOUS RECOVERY AFTER SURVIVING LASSA FEVER

Family, friends and well-wishers gathered at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Idyer on Sunday, 10th May , 2026, for a thanksgiving service by Dr. Ijiko Bartholomew Eche after surviving a life-threatening battle with Lassa fever.

The thanksgiving service was followed by a reception at Newcastle Event Centre, where guests celebrated what many described as a miraculous recovery and a second chance at life for Dr. Eche.

Narrating his experience, Dr. Ijiko Bartholomew Eche said his health challenge began on February 13, 2026, with severe fever before he presented himself at Benue State University Teaching Hospital on February 15 where he was admitted at the emergency unit.

He said he was later transferred to the isolation unit after doctors suspected Lassa fever, which was subsequently confirmed, adding that his condition deteriorated daily until it was agreed he should be moved to Jos University Teaching Hospital for dialysis treatment.

According to him, plans were already underway to transfer him to Erua in Edo State after the dialysis machine in Jos failed for two days before doctors later announced to him that the machine had been repaired and was ready for use.

Dr. Eche disclosed that while undergoing dialysis, he became restless and later passed on, with the medical team concluding that he was dead, saying he experienced his spirit leaving his body before hearing his younger brother, Inalegwu, screaming and calling him back to life.

He said he then heard a powerful voice commanding him to return to his body, which he obeyed and about five minutes later, he regained consciousness, blinked his eyes and held his brother’s hand, leaving everyone around shocked at what they described as a miraculous resurrection.

Dr. Eche added that he later walked back to the ward himself and gradually regained strength until he was discharged, appreciating all those who supported him, including his dear wife, through prayers, emotional encouragement and financial assistance during the difficult period.

Also speaking during the reception, Dr. Michael Ejiko, elder brother of Dr. Eche, recalled how the family battled to save their late mother 21 years ago at the Federal Medical Centre, but lost her despite every effort.

He said the painful memory resurfaced when Dr. Eche suddenly became critically ill, adding that the family engaged in intense prayers as he suffered repeated convulsions, oxygen dependency and several blood transfusions during the difficult period.

Mr. Inalegwu Eche, younger brother of Dr. Ijiko, confirmed accompanying his brother and wife from Makurdi to Jos, insisting that Dr. Ijiko truly died during the dialysis process before God restored him back to life like Lazarus in the Bible.

Delivering a sermon on thanksgiving, Pastor Angel Akali, of Dunamis Church North-Bank, described thanksgiving as living by God’s mercies, stressing that the greatest gift from God is life and urging guests to see Dr. Ijiko’s survival as a testimony capable of inspiring millions.

In separate goodwill messages, Dr. Solomon Obekpa, Dr. Emmanuel Ikyoive and Nurse Priscilla Adzo thanked God for preserving Dr. Ijiko’s life, noting that they actively participated throughout his treatment and recovery process.

The exercise, held on May 7th and 8th, 2026, attracted applicants from different parts of the state and beyond, all aspiring to secure admission into the institution’s professional health programmes.

The screening covered seven programmes including Community Health Officers (CHO), Health Information Management (HIM), and Biomedical Engineering Technology (BMET) offered by the Institute.

He noted that the programmes became possible through the leadership of Hyacinth Iormem Alia and the efforts of Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande.

BSUTH STAFF TRAINED ON LASSA FEVER PREVENTION, COVID-19 PREPAREDNESS

The Benue State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, on Wednesday, 6th May , 2026, organized an awareness and sensitization training for staff of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, on Lassa fever prevention and COVID-19 preparedness.

Addressing participants at the GOPD Conference Hall, the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Msuega Asema, said the training became necessary following the recent reoccurrence of Lassa fever outbreaks across Benue State.

He noted that the programme was aimed at strengthening preparedness among healthcare workers and improving response strategies for future outbreaks of Lassa fever and COVID-19 within health facilities and surrounding communities across the state.

Dr. Asema explained that participants were being equipped with knowledge on the causes, transmission, prevention and treatment of Lassa fever, urging staff to take the exercise seriously for effective disease control and public safety.

Presenting a paper, Dr. Asema described Lassa fever as a viral hemorrhagic disease caused by the Lassa virus and mainly transmitted through the multimammate rat, scientifically known as Mastomys natalensis.

He stated that though no medically approved Lassa fever drugs currently exist for public use, early detection and treatment with the antiviral drug Ribavirin could improve recovery and reduce mortality among infected patients.

In another presentation, Dr. Vivian Shaahu, representing the Head of Community and Public Health, Dr. Grace Rimamnunra, stressed the importance of infection prevention, hand hygiene, use of Personal Protective Equipment and proper medical waste disposal.

Also speaking, Princess Dr. Doofan Ayatse Agishi and WHO Surveillance Officer Dr. Khalid Abubakar highlighted symptoms, prevention methods and early reporting procedures, while participants engaged resource persons during an interactive question-and-answer session.
