FLOATERS

👁️ Seeing Spots, Strings or Cobwebs? Let’s Talk About Eye Floaters

Those little specks, strings, or cobwebs drifting across your vision can catch you off guard.
They seem to _dance away_ when you try to focus on them, and it’s normal to feel worried.

The sudden appearance of eye floaters often sparks frustration — especially when they interfere with reading, driving, or just enjoying a clear view of the world.

👁️ What Exactly Are Eye Floaters?
Eye floaters are shadowy shapes that appear to float in your field of vision.
They might look like:
- Black or gray dots
- Threads or squiggly lines
- Cobweb-like structures

They move as your eyes move and often drift away when you try to look directly at them.

The truth? These shadows are cast by tiny bits of debris floating inside the vitreous — the clear, gel-like substance that fills your eye between the lens and retina.

The Good News
Most eye floaters are a *normal part of aging and not a threat to your sight.
But knowing when floaters could signal something more serious is what keeps anxiety away. And there’s one key step many people miss.

Don’t ignore changes in your vision. Early checks make all the difference.

Experiencing new or sudden floaters? Book a comprehensive eye exam with us today.

INTRAVITREAL INJECTION/ INJECTION INTO THE EYE BALL

Ever wondered why some patients receive injections directly into the eye?

At The Premium Nation's Eye Hospital, Nsukka, we offer one of the most advanced treatments in retinal care: Anti-VEGF injections.

What is VEGF?
VEGF means _Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor_. It’s a substance that causes abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage inside the eye.
Anti-VEGF medications help block this process. They reduce swelling and protect you from further vision loss.

Eye conditions we treat with Anti-VEGF injections:

1️⃣ Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)
➡️ Diabetes can cause fluid to leak into the macula, leading to blurred or distorted vision.

2️⃣ Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (Wet AMD)
➡️ Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid vision changes.

3️⃣ Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO)
➡️ A blocked retinal vein can cause bleeding and swelling in the macula.

4️⃣ Myopic Choroidal Neovascularization (Myopic CNV)
➡️ Severe nearsightedness can trigger abnormal blood vessel growth.

5️⃣ Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV) from Other Causes
➡️ Inflammatory eye diseases or other retinal disorders may also cause it.

6️⃣ Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
➡️ In some premature babies, Anti-VEGF therapy helps control abnormal retinal vessel growth.

✨ Important: Anti-VEGF injections don’t “cure blindness.” They control abnormal vessel growth, reduce leakage, and help preserve the vision you have.
Early diagnosis and regular eye checks give the best results.

👁️ See us immediately if you notice: sudden vision loss, distorted vision, difficulty reading, or straight lines looking wavy.

At The Premium Nation's Eye Hospital, Nsukka, your vision is our priority.
Early detection saves sight.

Cataract is NOT just an "old people's disease"

A lot of people believe cataracts only affect the elderly.
The truth? Cataracts can affect anyone — children, young adults, and middle-aged people too.

Other common causes besides age:
- Eye injury
- Diabetes
- Prolonged UV exposure
- Steroid use
- Genetics / Born with it

Don’t wait until your vision gets worse. Early detection saves sight.

POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT Seeing Flashes or Floaters? It Could Be Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)As we grow olde...

POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT

Seeing Flashes or Floaters? It Could Be Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)

As we grow older, changes happen inside our eyes too.

Inside your eye is a clear gel called the vitreous. With age, 2 things happen to it:
1. Vitreous Syneresis: The gel starts to shrink and clump together
2. Vitreous Synchysis: The gel turns more watery and forms fluid pockets

When the gel shrinks and liquefies, it can pull away from the retina at the back of the eye. This is called a Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD).

Who gets PVD?
It’s most common after age 50, but it can happen earlier if you have:
- High myopia (severe short-sightedness)
- History of eye trauma
- Had cataract surgery
- Eye inflammation

Common Symptoms
- Sudden floaters - little specks, threads, or cobwebs drifting in your vision
- Flashes of light - like lightning in the side of your eye
- A ring-shaped floater called a "Weiss Ring" around the center of vision

Is PVD dangerous?
Most cases of PVD are harmless and part of normal aging.
However, as the vitreous pulls away, it can sometimes tug on the retina. This may lead to:
- Retinal tear
- Vitreous bleeding
- Retinal detachment

That’s why any new flashes or floaters should be checked immediately.

How do we diagnose it?
At The Premium Nation's Eye Hospital, we use:
- Dilated eye exam to view the retina
- Slit-lamp + special lens* examination
- OCT Scan if needed
- B-scan Ultrasound if the view is blocked by bleeding

Treatment
Uncomplicated PVD usually needs no treatment. The floaters often become less noticeable over weeks to months as your brain adjusts.

BUT seek urgent eye care if you notice:
A sudden increase in floaters, new flashes, a dark "curtain" over vision, or sudden drop in vision. These can be signs of a retinal tear/detachment and need immediate attention.

Key Takeaway:
PVD is common and often normal with age. But only a dilated eye exam can rule out sight-threatening problems.
Don’t ignore new flashes and floaters.

Your vision is worth protecting. Book a comprehensive dilated eye exam today.
