UNSCATHED

EPISODE 4

The atmosphere in the room became tense.

The other two guys handed Wilson a cigarette to light, and smoke filled the room.

Just then, a guy also came out from another part of the room. Making it five of them.

Wilson and one of the guys named Winnie pushed both Paulina and Shade to the center of the living room so hard.

Shade couldn't take the smoke coming from the cigarette anymore as she coughed hard.

“Can you please stop the cigarette?” Shade said, breathing hard.

“Who is this?” Wilson asked angrily.
“You dey my villa, you dey tell me wetin I suppose do?” Wilson said furiously.
One of the guys shoved Shade roughly. She fell to the ground, and Paulina flinched.

She wished she had listened to Shade as she regretted her actions. She wished she hadn't persuaded her.

“Calm down guys. Let's respect her wishes. Stop smoking for now. Open the curtains.” One of the guys who seemed to be the leader said.
They put off the light on the cigarette and opened the windows so that fresh air could come in as instructed. They also put on the fan.

Then Wilson bent down so he could see their faces well.
“We devised a plan and I am glad you both walked into it without stress,” he said, smiling deadly.

He slowly stood up as he made a sign to other members of his gang that they all understood.

“When a rat comes into our den, what do we do?” Wilson said with a deadly look.

“We torture them and kill them.” The other members chorused.

“Yes, that is what we do, because these ones have become loose rats, and that is what we do to them.”

Both Paulina and Shade gasped with fear.

“Please, don't harm us, release us to go,” Paulina begged with hot tears streaming down her face.
Shade on the hand kept sobbing silently because at that point, she didn't know what to do.

“Even if I have suffered all my life, this shouldn't happen to me.” She thought about her mother, her siblings, her dreams. She could see everything crashing down right before her eyes. She cried harder as a gasp of regret escaped her lips.
Begging wasn't even an option for her because the Wilson they met at the club is not the one standing in front of them. The Wilson standing in front of them is now a wolf ready to tear apart anyone into pieces.

She was beginning to accept her fate that wherever it is going to end, it should.

Wilson got frustrated with Paulina's constant begging and he gave her a deafening slap.

“We no dey beg here. E no dey our dictionary,” Wilson said, fuming with intense anger.

“Guys let's get to business,” Wilson gestured to them.

To be continued.

I was listening to one of Brian Tracy’s podcasts with his children, and at the end of it, he said something that stood out to me. He said, "Self-esteem automatically leads to living a healthy life."

Personally, what I could deduce from this is that living a healthy life is not just about how good the food you eat or consume is. Yeah, health-wise, we are what we eat, but if you really want to live a healthy life full of confidence, you have to love yourself first.

Most people look down on themselves, thinking that they can’t amount to anything or that they can’t measure up in life because of the environment they grew up in.

And that is a blatant lie.

For you to become that confident person, you have to love yourself first.

Say it to yourself daily that you love yourself, despite what anyone may think or say.

Block out those negative voices and keep affirming that self-love until it becomes deeply rooted in your subconscious mind.

UNSCATHED

EPISODE 3

Finally, they got to Wilson's house. It was a fenced duplex painted cream.

He got down to open the gate so he could drive in.

Both Paulina and Shade got down when he drove into the compound and the beauty of the exterior that greeted them was breathtaking all thanks to the light surrounding the house which made it possible for them to have a good sight of what the surrounding looked like at that time of the night.

Shade only scanned through the compound but Paulina took her time to appreciate the work of
art and nature that was beautifully done with flowers.

Not that she hadn't seen something like it before, but she wasn't expecting anything of the sort.

“Are you married?” she asked out of curiosity.

“No, I am not,” the guy answered, chuckling.

Shade was just looking at her with a bombastic side eye.

“Please, let's go in,” the guy said.

The exterior was decorated with flowers along the pathway leading to the house.

Paulina couldn't help but admire the beauty of the exterior building. She had to stop on her track to take in the beauty before she went inside.
Immediately they entered, Paulina stopped in her tracks; she quickly went back to check the outside again, to be sure she was seeing right.

Shade, too, became confused, the sight that met them inside bore no resemblance to what they had seen outside.
The living room was left unpainted with marks across the wall.
At the right handside wall that Shade was facing, she saw a drawing that indicated that they were cult members.
She turned around to look at Paulina but she wasn't looking at her direction and there was no way she could call her attention.

Shade's fear became heightened and Paulina became more confused and curious.

“Are you sure we are still in the same compound we saw outside?” Paulina asked.
“Yes, you are. Welcome to my humble abode,” the guy said, smiling mischievously.
A wave of cigarette smoke passed through both Paulina and Shade’s nose.

Just then, two guys came out from one of the rooms smoking.

“How far, guy? You don come back?” one of the guys asked Wilson in a husky voice, and it sent shivers down Shade's spine.

“Yes, I don come back,” the guy answered, and one of the guys who had come out of the room looked Paulina and Shade over from head to toe, smiling dryly.

He gave Wilson a look that was suspicious.

Just then, Wilson went to the door and bolted it.

Shade sensed this and she became more scared.
Paulina on the other hand was still trying to make sense of how the whole thing is still unraveling.

She feared that they might have entered the lion's den.

Habits are not formed overnight. It takes consistent and continuous practice before something becomes a habit.

You may have always wondered how someone was able to achieve a great feat. It is the power of habit.

You may see another person and ask, "How did they get themselves into this mess?"

It could be the power of habit.

Whether good or bad, habits begin with the little things that we do until they become a part of us.

The main essence of this is that we need to be conscious of the habits we have built over time because they are a mark of what we will become over time, whether good or bad.

And it takes conscious effort to build good habits.

Decide to build habits that will be beneficial to you, the people around you, and your society.

This is one of the ways the world can become a better place to live in.

What habit have you been struggling to change?

Drop it in the comment section.

UNSCATHED

EPISODE 2

She sat up on her bed with a downcast feeling as more scenes of what happened the other night came rushing back.

They had just stepped into the hall where the concert would take place.
The hall was almost filled to the brim as students from other universities were also in attendance.

She suddenly became uncomfortable seeing the crowd. She called Paulina's attention but she told her to wave it off because she was there and that nothing was going to happen.

“Can we please just go back to the hostel? I don't feel safe here,” Shade said, scanning her eyes through the hall.
At the other end of the hall, she saw some group of guys, about ten in number, debating about who was going to catch the biggest fish for the night…

Shade watched them closely and she slowly turned to Paulina.

“What are they doing over there?” Shade asked curiously.

“I don't know. Let's find somewhere to sit,”
Paulina said as she quickly distracted Shade's attention from it.

A few minutes later, the party started with the hip hop artist coming up on stage for his performance.
The hall went wild with excitement as people screamed for joy.

A few minutes to 1am, the party ended.
Some people went back to their hostel, some lodged in a nearby hotel till dawn.
Shade and Paulina kind of became stranded because going to their hostel by that time of the night isn't an option as their hostel gate would have been locked.

They hung around the hall with Shade feeling more uncomfortable and afraid. Not long after, they saw a guy approaching them.

“Hi, beautiful ladies,” the guy said, smiling widely as he approached them.

“Hi,” Paulina answered as Shade watched them.

“My name is Wilson,” he said.

“What's keeping you two beautiful ladies waiting?” Wilson immediately added.

“We don't have anywhere to go because our hostel will be locked by now,” Paulina interjected quickly before Shade could say anything. Shade felt Paulina shouldn't have said what she said.

“Oh… how about I give you two a lift to my place? I hope that's okay with you,” Wilson replied.

“Yes, that's okay by us,” Paulina answered, giving Shade no room to voice her opinion.

“Ok, follow me,” Wilson said as he took a step toward the exit door.

Both Shade and Paulina followed the guy after he had taken a few steps ahead.

Shade pinched Paulina, reminding her that they shouldn't have sold themselves so cheaply to a guy they didn't know.

“What if he's trying to harm us?” Shade whispered.

“No, he can't, he is such a good and cool guy,” Paulina whispered in response.

“You know him?” Shade asked, confused.

“No, I don't,” Paulina answered and Shade gave her a deadly look. You could see that Shade wasn't interested in following the guy home but she had no choice and since Paulina was with her, she felt safe a bit even while still feeling somehow about the whole thing

They got to where Wilson had parked his car, and he ushered them in.

Paulina noticed that Wilson's car was no ordinary car but a Lexus Jeep.

Paulina exclaimed, and both Shade and Wilson looked at her. It was then that Shade saw the guy's face clearly and remembered where she had seen him before, he was one of the ten guys who had been debating who would catch the biggest fish for the night.

She swallowed hard as she entered the car with Paulina.

UNSCATHED.

EPISODE 1

The morning sun fell on Shade's face as she tried changing her position on her student bed.

She tried to open her eyes, but a dull throb at her temple made it difficult.
She grunted in pain as she tried remembering what had happened the previous days.

She had just returned from her classes when her friend Paulina knocked on her door.
She asked to know who it was.
“It is me, Paulina,“ she answered.
“Ok, I'm coming, give me a few minutes,” Shade replied.

Shade opened the door for Paulina to come in as they exchanged greetings.

“What brought you here?” Shade asked.
“Girl, there is a party tonight at the Courts Lounge tonight,” Paulina said humorously.

“Hmm hmm…” Shade gestured feeling indifferent about what Paulina had said.

“Your favourite hip hop artist will be in attendance,” Paulina said humorously.

“Who?” Shade asked, raising her eyebrows.

“Ahn ahn, don't tell me you don't know your favourite hip hop artist,” she answered, getting a little upset because she knew how badly Shade had always wanted to see her favourite artist perform live, and now that she was telling her, she couldn't understand why Shade wasn't excited and was acting uninterested.
“I don't and I can't remember,” Shade answered ignoring Paulina's displeasure.

“You never chop? Or why the sudden dementia that has made you forget who your favourite artist is?” she asked without expecting an answer. Then she continued…

“Raycon,” Paulina added.

“Oh…” Shade murmured, trying to feign excitement.

“Yes, so he will be performing live on stage by 9pm tonight. Will you be coming?”

“No, I am not interested,” she answered firmly with a smirk on her face.

“Haba, why now? Or isn't it the same artist you've been longing to see? Why the sudden disinterest?” Paulina said.

“Yes, I have been longing to see him but not tonight. I just want to sleep, rest and prepare for tomorrow's class,” she answered with a tone of finality.

Paulina looked at her friend to be sure she heard right. She knew Shade has always wanted this but she didn't understand why she just felt so uninterested. She knew what she said was her final verdict.

She thought for a while and instantly, the reason why she wouldn't want to go popped up in her mind.

“Oh… I understand the reason why you wouldn't want to go. I know you have pending bills, school fees, and other expenses, but don't worry if you agree to go with me tonight, I will sort out the bills,” Paulina said, assuring Shade.

“Oh… you will? You are such a darling. Thank you.” Shade's face lit up as she heard what Paulina said. She was so excited that she gave Paulina a hug. She didn't even know how Paulina was going to get the money, but she felt relieved.

Throughout her days as a young girl into her late teens, Shade hadn't been fortunate enough to live a life of luxury.
It has been from one hardship to the other.
As if what she has passed through was not enough, her father died when she was about to enter university.
Not that her dad really loved her but at least he provided in the little way he could.

Since her days in the university from 100 level to her current 300 level she has really suffered.

Her friend, on the other hand, had lived a life of luxury and had always enjoyed it. She only knew that people suffered; she never truly believed it until she met Shade, who shared her story with her and that was how their friendship began.

Good morning beautiful people.

This is a September to remember.

The word of the Lord for you today is from Isaiah 41: 17-20

17: When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

18: I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.

19: I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the sh*ttah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together

20: That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

Have a lovely day
