Some men are not okay, they are just very good at acting like they are.

It is not always anger. Sometimes it is pressure, stress, loneliness, and the feeling of not being seen.

Many men were taught early to be strong, handle everything, and stay quiet, so they learned to keep things inside even when it gets heavy.

Sometimes it is not about losing people, but about losing parts of themselves just to keep going.

Being needed is not the same as being loved.
Sometimes a man just needs to hear that he does not have to earn care.

At Elpida Shelter, we believe men’s mental health matters, and we are committed to making support accessible.

Take care of the men around you. Check in on them. Do not wait until everything falls apart before you show up.

NIGERIA DEMOCRACY DAY

Today, we celebrate Nigeria’s Democracy Day and the values that bring us together as a people: unity, inclusion, resilience, and hope.

At Elpida Shelter, we believe that every voice matters and that thriving communities are built when people feel supported, valued, and empowered. As we mark this important day, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting wellbeing, compassion, and positive change.

Together, let us continue building a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive Nigeria.

Happy Democracy Day!

Imagine being a child and waking up every day not to go to school, play with friends, or dream about your future, but to work just to survive.

While many children spend their days learning, laughing, and discovering who they want to become, millions are carrying burdens no child should have to bear.

Childhood is meant for learning, growing, making mistakes, playing, and dreaming big. When a child is forced into labour, they do not just lose time, they lose opportunities, education, and parts of their future.

Today, let us remember that every child deserves a chance to be a child.

Let us speak up for their right to education, protection, and hope. Because children belong in classrooms, on playgrounds, and in loving environments, not in workplaces.

Let children learn, grow, and dream. Child labour has no place in their future.

You don’t have to hold it all in.

Many men grow up hearing the same message: be strong, keep going, deal with it yourself.
But carrying stress, anxiety, heartbreak, financial pressure, or emotional pain in silence can be exhausting.

This Men’s Mental Health Month, we want to remind every man that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of strength. You do not have to face life’s challenges alone.
Check in on the men around you. Ask how they are really doing. And if you are struggling, know that support is available.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 🌍

When we think about health, we often think about our bodies. But the environment around us plays a bigger role than we realize.
The air we breathe. The trees that give us shade. The clean spaces where we walk, rest, and connect with others. These things affect our daily lives in ways both big and small.
Looking after our environment is not just about protecting nature. It is about creating healthier communities for everyone.

And while we do not talk about it enough, our surroundings can affect our mental health too. A little time outdoors, access to green spaces, and a cleaner environment can help us feel calmer, more connected, and less overwhelmed by the pressures of everyday life.

This World Environment Day, let us remember that caring for the planet is also a way of caring for ourselves.

A healthier environment supports a healthier mind.

Happy New Month.

A new month is a reminder that growth does not have to be dramatic. Small daily habits like getting enough rest, staying connected, and checking in with yourself can make a real difference to your mental wellbeing.

Here’s to a June filled with progress, healing, and hope.

Motherhood can be beautiful and exhausting at the same time.

Sometimes a mother is carrying her baby with love while quietly carrying sadness, anxiety, confusion, and emotional exhaustion too. And because she is expected to “enjoy every moment,” many women suffer in silence.

Postpartum depression is real. It is not weakness. It is not attention seeking.
And it does not make anyone a bad mother.

Some mothers just need someone to listen without judging them. A little patience, support, and kindness can mean more than people realise.

Mothers deserve care too. 🤍

The way we speak to ourselves matters more than we realize.

So many of us wake up already carrying pressure, doubt, anxiety, or the feeling that we’re not doing enough. And after a while, those thoughts stop sounding like passing emotions and start sounding like facts.

But maybe healing starts with changing the conversation we have with ourselves.

Not every thought deserves to be believed.
Not every mistake defines who you are.
And not every hard day means you’re failing.

“I have to” can become “I get to.”
“I ruined everything” can become “I’m still learning.”
“I can’t do this” can become “I can try again tomorrow.”

Small shifts in the words we repeat to ourselves can slowly change the way we see our lives.

Be gentle with your mind. It’s listening. 🤍

What really is the 5-4-3-2-1 Technique?

Some days, your mind feels like it is carrying too much.

Your thoughts are racing. Your chest feels tight. You are trying to stay present, but everything around you feels louder than usual.

In moments like this, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique can help bring you back to the present.

Pause and notice:

5 things you can see.
4 things you can touch.
3 things you can hear.
2 things you can smell.
1 thing you can taste.

It may seem simple, but it works by gently shifting your attention away from overwhelming thoughts and back to what is happening right now.

This technique can help reduce anxiety, calm your nervous system, and create a sense of control when your mind feels scattered.

It will not solve everything in a single moment, but it can help you slow down, breathe, and feel a little more grounded.

Sometimes, that small pause is exactly what you need.
