Red eyes are one of the most common ways your eyes tell you that something might be wrong.

Eye infections, allergies, trauma, inflammation, glaucoma, etc can all make your eyes turn red.

While some red eyes may go away on their own, it is important you see your eye care provider especially if you also have pain in the eyes, flashes of light, swelling, itching, discharges and reduced vision.

Aging is the most common cause of cataracts, one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness globally.

There's a clear structure in your eye.
This structure is called the crystalline lens.

As you age, this lens gradually becomes cloudy. Vision starts to blur. Lights may glare. Colors lose their brightness.

Cataracts do not have to take your vision, however.

The treatment involves a simple surgical procedure where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial one.

It’s quick, commonly done, and in most cases, very successful.

So if your vision is getting worse with age, speak with your eye care provider.

It’s no longer news that vision loss from glaucoma is permanent.

But why?

At the center of the damage are specialized cells called retinal ganglion cells, which form the optic nerve.

In glaucoma, these cells are progressively damaged and eventually die.

Unlike many tissues in the body, cells in the brain and spinal cord have very limited ability to repair or regenerate. And because the optic nerve is part of the brain, once these cells are lost, they cannot recover.

This means the pathway that carries visual information from the eye to the brain is permanently disrupted, leading to irreversible vision loss.
