Yesterday, 30 July, the world marked the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with the 2026 theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam."

This year's theme shines a light on the growing menace of human trafficking through fake job offers, online deception, and forced criminality. Behind many of these scams are real people whose freedom, dignity, and future have been stolen.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Esan South East Division, Edo State Branch, strongly condemns human trafficking in all its forms. Exploiting vulnerable people for profit is a cruel violation of human rights and an attack on our shared humanity.

As humanitarians, we call on everyone to remain vigilant, question suspicious offers, educate family members and friends, and speak up when something seems wrong. Creating safer communities begins with awareness and collective responsibility.

Every victim deserves protection. Every survivor deserves hope. Every trafficker must be held accountable.

People are not for sale. Together, we can help end human trafficking.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Esan South East Division, carried out a rapid assessment and humanitarian visitation following the heavy rainstorm and windstorm that affected parts of Ubiaja and surrounding communities in Esan South East LGA, Edo State, on the evening of June 5, 2026.

The disaster caused varying degrees of damage to residential buildings, with several houses losing their roofs while others suffered partial structural damage. Many affected families were left exposed and are currently seeking temporary shelter with relatives and neighbors.

Communities visited during the assessment include Uhe, Okhuesan, and Idumebor communities, where Red Cross volunteers interacted with affected residents to assess urgent humanitarian needs and provide reassurance.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society remains concerned about the wellbeing of vulnerable families affected by the incident and will continue to monitor the situation for possible humanitarian support and further intervention where necessary.

We appreciate community members and volunteers who continue to support response efforts during this difficult period.

Today, volunteers of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Esan South East Division, visited the Public Field in Ubiaja in commemoration of Children’s Day 2026.

Although the main celebration did not hold as planned, some children were present at the venue, and we turned the moment into an opportunity to make impact.

Our volunteers educated the children on the importance of proper handwashing and how good hand hygiene helps prevent the spread of diseases caused by germs and bacteria. The session was practical and interactive, as many of the children participated in handwashing demonstrations with excitement and enthusiasm.

IEC materials on hand hygiene were also shared to reinforce healthy practices and promote disease prevention among children and the wider community.

Every child deserves access to health information, safety, and a healthy future. Even in simple moments, humanity can still make a difference.

One powerful way we show kindness and responsibility is by keeping our hands clean. Wash them well with soap and water:
- Before and after eating, so germs don't sneak into your body
- After using the toilet, to stop sickness from spreading to friends and family
- After playing outside, when dirt and germs are everywhere

This little habit isn't just about you staying strong—it helps keep your whole community healthier, especially kids who might not have easy access to doctors or medicine. Clean hands truly build a kinder, safer world for all children.

Let's all join hands (clean ones, of course!) in teaching and practicing this. Parents, teachers, and grown-ups: your guidance today shapes tomorrow's compassionate leaders.

Today, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Esan South East Division, took action in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 through a powerful outreach in selected secondary schools within the division.

Originally planned for the 28th of May, the programme was moved forward because schools will not be in session due to public holidays, including Children’s Day and a religious observance period. The decision ensured that students were not left out and that the message reached them at the right time.

The outreach focused on tackling period poverty, breaking menstrual stigma, and promoting proper menstrual hygiene education in schools where it matters most.

Interactive sessions were held at Giftday College, Ubiaja, and Royal Stars Ambassador Academy, where students engaged openly on menstrual hygiene management, personal hygiene, adolescent health, and self-awareness.

One message was made clear—menstruation is natural, not shameful. Myths were challenged, silence was broken, and confidence was encouraged.

Boys were not left out of the conversation. They were actively engaged and taught the importance of respect, empathy, and support for girls during menstruation. Because a supportive school environment is everyone’s responsibility, not just a gender issue.

To strengthen impact beyond the classroom, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials were distributed to reinforce learning and encourage healthy hygiene practices.

Sanitary pads were also donated, and pad banks were established in schools to ensure that no girl is forced to miss class due to lack of access to sanitary products. A simple intervention, but one that protects dignity and education.

Red Cross School Units were also introduced to sustain health education, volunteerism, leadership, and humanitarian engagement among students.

This is more than a programme. It is a commitment—to dignity, to education, and to ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period.

The Esan South East Division remains committed to expanding this impact to more schools as support continues to grow.

A girl should never have to miss school because of her period.
She should never feel ashamed for something natural.
She should never suffer in silence because society refuses to talk about menstrual health.

As we approach World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Esan South East Division, is stepping into schools to create safe spaces where girls can speak freely, learn confidently, and receive support without fear of stigma or embarrassment.

Through our Red Cross School Units, we are teaching students that menstruation is normal, hygiene is a right, and every girl deserves dignity.

But this programme goes beyond sanitary pads.

We are also addressing Gender-Based Violence, bodily autonomy, personal safety, and the importance of speaking up against abuse. Too many young people are silently facing harassment, exploitation, and violence because they do not know who to trust or where to report. That silence must end.

Today, we are grateful to announce that over 100 small packs of sanitary pads have already been donated by compassionate individuals who believe in this cause. Yet, the reality remains painful — many more girls still need help.

One small donation can keep a girl in school.
One conversation can save a child from abuse.
One act of kindness can restore dignity.

Our office remains open to individuals, organizations, and partners willing to support this humanitarian effort through sanitary pad donations or financial support for menstrual hygiene materials.

Let us raise a generation where no girl feels hidden, mocked, unsafe, or abandoned because of menstruation.

Periods are normal.
Dignity is a right.
Silence is the real problem.
