That completely changed on this day, July 10, in 1893.
Before modern anesthesia, blood banks, or antibiotics, a pioneering surgeon named Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed one of the world's first successful open-heart surgeries.
The Case: A patient arrived at the emergency clinic with a severe stab wound to the chest. With his patient fading fast, Dr. Williams operated on the live, beating heart, carefully suturing a tear in the pericardium (the sac surrounding the heart).
Against incredible odds, the patient fully recovered and lived for decades.
