"The Body Carries What the Mind Avoids"

One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that the body often tells the truth before the mind is ready to.

Stress, tension, fatigue, and recurring physical patterns aren't always problems to fight—they can be messages inviting us to pay closer attention.

In How to Make Life Simple, Happy and Successful: The Taoist Way, I explore how greater self-awareness begins by observing ourselves honestly rather than simply treating the symptoms. When we learn to listen instead of resist, we often discover the real source of what we're experiencing.

Sometimes healing doesn't begin with doing more.

It begins with understanding more.

Have you ever noticed your body trying to tell you something before your mind caught up?

After a complete stranger described my life with astonishing accuracy, I couldn't stop wondering how he knew so much about me.
As I wrote in my book:
"Unbelievable that this strange old Asian man could see this by just watching me! This made me very curious on how he could see this and so I invited him to come home with me and tell me more. And so he did!"
At my home, he explained that he was a Taoist monk who had been invited to the seminar to help with a project in Thailand. During the seminar, he had noticed me and was convinced he needed to help me. At the time, I thought it was intuition. Little did I know.
We talked for hours. He helped me understand my childhood, my lack of self-worth, and even showed me that I wasn't stupid—I was dyslexic. He was already introducing me to the ancient Taoist philosophy, although I didn't realize it then.
He spent the next five weeks at my home. Looking back, I realize he was testing whether I had the discipline to learn what he could teach. At the end of those five weeks, he asked if I wanted to continue learning the Taoist philosophy with him.
That single decision—to invite a stranger into my home—became the beginning of a journey that changed the direction of my life forever.

In 1993, I was working as a financial interim manager. I made good money, but I wasn't happy with my work or my life. During one seminar, I noticed a small old Asian man who kept looking at me. I finally walked over to ask him why he was staring.
Before I could say anything, he apologized and told me he had noticed my unhappiness.
He said:
"You don't feel good enough."
When I asked how he could possibly know that, he replied:
"I can see this in your posture, you look like you are carrying the whole world on your shoulder, your eyes speak of sadness and your back hurts."
He continued:
"You never got the appreciation you deserve from people around you and this has affected your self-worth and self-confidence. This has caused you to lose yourself in the process. You have no idea who you are and what's your purpose in this life. Would you like to change this?"
I was stunned that a complete stranger could understand so much simply by observing me.
Looking back, that brief conversation changed the direction of my life.

From one small country to readers around the world.

When I first began studying Taoist philosophy, I never imagined my work would reach readers beyond the Netherlands.

What started as a personal search for understanding became years of studying, teaching, writing, and helping people see life through a different lens.

The principles in How to Make Life Simple, Happy and Successful: The Taoist Way aren't about making life perfect. They're about learning to see more clearly, respond more wisely, and create lasting change from within.

I'm grateful that these ideas continue to resonate with readers across different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.

No matter where we live, we all search for many of the same things: peace, clarity, purpose, and a simpler way to live.

Thank you for being part of that journey.

What If You're Wrong About Yourself?
For many years, I believed something about myself that wasn't true.
At school, I was very slow and had trouble keeping up with the pace of learning in my class.
"This always made me think I must be stupid."
Everything changed when I met my Taoist teacher.
He showed me the opposite.
He explained that I wasn't stupid—I was dyslexic. That realization changed how I saw myself and became the beginning of a completely different path in my life.
How many beliefs do we carry about ourselves that were formed years ago—but were never actually true?
Sometimes, one conversation...
One mentor...
Or one new perspective...
Can change the direction of your life forever.
Has someone ever helped you see yourself differently than you saw yourself?

In 1993, I was working as a financial interim manager. From the outside, I was successful. Inside, I wasn't happy with my work or my life.
During a seminar, I noticed a small elderly Asian man staring at me. I found it irritating.
After the seminar, I approached him to ask why.
Before I could say anything, he apologized and told me he had noticed my unhappiness. He described my posture, my sadness, my lack of self-worth, and even my back pain—simply by observing me.
I invited him to my home, where he revealed he was a Taoist monk.
Looking back, I wrote:
"At that time I thought it to be intuition? Little did I know?"
That conversation changed my life.
Over the next five weeks, he helped me understand who I was, why I had struggled for so many years, and what my purpose could become. It was the beginning of my journey into Taoist philosophy and the work I do today.
Sometimes the people who change our lives don't arrive by accident.
The real question is whether we're willing to listen when they do.
Has someone ever entered your life at exactly the right moment and changed your direction?

My Taoist Teacher Tested Me Before He Taught Me

For five weeks, I spent hours talking with my Taoist teacher. At the time, I believed I was simply learning from him.

Years later, I realized something very different.

Those conversations had also been a test.

Only after years of training did I understand that my teacher had been observing far more than my questions. He was quietly assessing my commitment, discipline, and whether I was ready to continue learning.

That realization changed the way I think about growth.

The best teachers don't always begin by giving answers. Sometimes they first discover whether a student is ready to receive them.

Throughout my book, I explain that our Whole is constantly communicating with us.
It does this through feelings, patterns, body language, intuition, and the signs we encounter in everyday life.
Too often, we dismiss those messages because they don't fit the outcome we want.
We convince ourselves to keep going, even when something doesn't feel right.
Only later do we look back and realize the signs were there all along.
Learning to recognize those signals isn't about fear.
It's about becoming more aware.
The more we pay attention, the more clearly we begin to understand what our Whole has been trying to tell us.
Sometimes the answers we're searching for aren't outside of us.
They're already within us—we simply need to listen.
Have you ever ignored your intuition, only to realize later it was trying to protect or guide you?

Why Can't We Let Go of the Past?
In my practice, I met a woman who couldn't say goodbye to her former boyfriends.
Every time she entered a new relationship, there was still unfinished business with an ex.
Sometimes it involved money.
Sometimes possessions.
Sometimes she simply felt there was still something left to say.
As I explain in my book, she always created a situation where there was still some unfinished business with an ex-boyfriend or lover.
Her new boyfriend eventually felt threatened by the constant contact with the previous relationship.
Instead of finding lasting happiness, the same pattern repeated itself again and again.
The problem wasn't the new relationship.
The problem was that the old one had never truly ended.
Only after dealing with the past, processing it, and letting it go can we begin a new relationship with a clean slate. Until then, the same lesson often returns in a different form.
Sometimes life isn't repeating the same lesson to punish us.
It's repeating it because there's still something we need to understand.
Have you ever realized that something unresolved from your past was quietly shaping your present?

I Had to Ask My Teacher for Permission. He Agreed... But Under One Condition.

After several years of training, I realized that this knowledge and philosophy should be available to more people. I asked my teacher if I could use what he had taught me to turn it into a real treatment for people who suffered from mental issues like I did before I met him.

He agreed—but under the condition that I would never tell anyone about him and that I would respect his privacy.

That promise remains important to me today.
