Are all injury-prevention programs equally effective?

This review suggests the answer may depend on the injury, the body region, and how the program is designed.

But the headline findings come with important methodological caveats.

So what should clinicians actually prioritize: simple strength work, multicomponent programs, or more sport-specific training?

Sometimes a clinical interest starts with a question that will not go away.

After a difficult recovery, Steven Zwerink began wondering why certain breathing strategies had never been mentioned by the specialists he had seen.

That curiosity became the starting point for a deeper exploration into breathing physiology, recovery, and the science behind methods that are often overlooked in healthcare.

Breathing is not something that only matters during “breathing exercises.”

It can show up during strength training, rehab exercises, movement assessment, posture, jaw position, and even how patients tolerate load.

In this episode, Steven Zwerink discusses why physiotherapists may benefit from observing breathing during everyday treatment—not as a separate add-on, but as part of how patients move, regulate intensity, and perform.

Nasal breathing is often presented as a simple choice: just close your mouth and breathe through your nose.

But what if the airway itself is the limiting factor?

In this episode, Steven Zwerink explains why breathing assessment may need to look beyond technique alone—considering nasal airflow, jaw structure, diaphragm function, CO₂ tolerance, chest mobility, and lung capacity.

A practical reminder for clinicians: before assuming a patient “just needs to breathe better,” we may need to understand what is making that difficult in the first place.

Do we really need one “best” treatment for every patient?

This editorial proposes treatment pluralism: the idea that several safe, plausible, and evidence-informed approaches may offer valid paths to recovery.

That does not mean every treatment is equally acceptable—or that clinical reasoning becomes less important. It means that when multiple reasonable options exist, the patient’s presentation, goals, preferences, clinical context, and the clinician’s expertise may all influence the decision.

An important caveat: this is an editorial and should be interpreted as an expert perspective, not as proof that individualized treatment matching improves outcomes.

Breathing rehabilitation is not only about lung capacity.

For some patients, the missing piece may be understanding how breathing mechanics, CO₂ tolerance, nasal breathing, and recovery strategies interact.

In this episode, Steven Zwerink shares why breathing education can sometimes reveal blind spots in care—and why physiotherapists may benefit from a broader understanding of respiratory function beyond the obvious clinical markers.

Can strengthening one muscle really improve chronic low back pain? 🤔

A new RCT investigated a stepwise gluteus maximus activation program, but the results may not be as straightforward as the authors suggest.

In this Research Review, we discuss the findings, the statistical interpretation, and why understanding the difference between improvement and superiority matters for clinical practice.

Can a breathing exercise really shift the body into a calmer state within minutes?

Coherent breathing is often used to support relaxation, recovery, and sleep—especially when the nervous system is still “on” after training, travel, stress, or competition.

In this episode, Steven Zwerink explains how a simple breathing rhythm can help athletes and patients move toward deeper rest, better recovery, and a greater sense of safety.

Breathing affects every patient we see—but how often do we truly assess it, train it, or consider its role in recovery?

In this episode, breathing physiologist Steven Zwerink joins us to discuss how breathing can influence health, performance, and rehabilitation.

From elite sport to concussion, whiplash, sleep, and recovery, this conversation explores why breathing deserves a more practical and clinically relevant place in physiotherapy.
