Combining transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), EEG, and fNIRS in a single setup opens exciting possibilities for studying the brain in action. In this blogpost, we explore the Starstim-fNIRS solution developed through the collaboration between Neuroelectrics and Artinis.

By integrating these complementary techniques into one headcap, researchers can simultaneously stimulate the brain, record electrical activity, and monitor hemodynamic responses. A powerful multimodal approach for studying brain function and neurostimulation effects in real time.

The setup combines the Starstim device for tES and EEG measurements with the wearable Brite fNIRS system, offering a flexible solution for neuroscience research.

What happens when you combine two complementary brain monitoring techniques in a single setup?
By pairing fNIRS with EEG, researchers can simultaneously measure fast neuronal responses alongside cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamic changes, offering a more complete picture of brain function in both health and disease.
In clinical research, this multimodal fNIRS-EEG approach shows strong potential for applications such as bedside monitoring, neurorehabilitation, epilepsy research, and the assessment of neurological disorders. Its portability and flexibility also make it especially valuable in settings where traditional neuroimaging techniques may be difficult to use.

In this blogpost, we explore the advantages, challenges, and practical considerations of combining both techniques, including how wearable systems such as the Brite can support multimodal brain monitoring in more naturalistic and patient-friendly environments.

Combining fNIRS and EEG offers researchers a powerful way to study brain function by capturing both hemodynamic and electrophysiological activity simultaneously. But integrating these techniques also comes with practical challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining high EEG signal quality.

In this blogpost, we discuss important considerations for integrated fNIRS-EEG measurements, including electrode placement, interference prevention, motion artifacts, and setup optimization for reliable data collection. The authors also share practical recommendations to help improve EEG recordings in combined fNIRS-EEG experiments.

A useful read for researchers working with multimodal neuroimaging setups, or planning to combine wearable EEG and fNIRS in future studies.

Rehabilitation is becoming smarter and more data-driven.
In their recent study, Wang et al. (2025) explored how parallel cognitive-motor tasks during robot-assisted rehabilitation affect cortical hemodynamic responses. Using the wearable Brite fNIRS device, the authors monitored prefrontal brain activation and highlight how combining cognitive and motor training may help optimize neurorehabilitation strategies and better understand patient workload during therapy.

🟑 The findings suggest that dual-task training significantly influences prefrontal activation, highlighting the importance of balancing cognitive load during rehabilitation.
πŸ”΅ These insights could help optimize therapy intensity and better tailor rehabilitation programs to individual patients.

As rehabilitation technologies continue to evolve, combining robotics, BCI approaches, and wearable neuroimaging may help pave the way toward more personalized and effective therapy strategies.

Can psychotherapy change the way two brains interact? 🧠🧠
In a recent proof-of-concept study, Haran Sened and colleagues explored inter-brain plasticity during psychotherapy for test anxiety.
Using the Brite for fNIRS hyperscanning, the researchers measured therapist and patient brain activity across 18 therapy sessions in participants undergoing a 6-session test anxiety treatment. Their results showed that inter-brain synchrony gradually increased over treatment and was associated with reduced symptoms, improved wellbeing and perceived session quality.

🟑 This highlights hyperscanning as a promising tool to study therapist-patient dynamics in real time.
πŸ”΅ It offers an exciting first step toward understanding inter-brain plasticity as a possible mechanism of change in psychotherapy.
🟑 It also shows how wearable fNIRS can support naturalistic research in clinical and rehabilitation settings.
