What is a doula? Part 2 of 4
A doula is familiar with the medical protocols used in regular birth care and works closely together with the medical staff. Many doulas are also educated in alternative, ancient and traditional techniques. If relevant and desired, she can share with new parents specific knowledge and shine a light on other options, pain relief, relaxation techniques, and help create a peaceful space within which the woman can respond instinctively to the needs of her body and birth her baby with trust. Doulas can offer in this way a little more autonomy in giving birth. Above all they offer loving support to the new parents.
