In collaboration with the Association des pharmaciens des établissements de santé du Québec (APES) and the Canadian Society of Healthcare Systems Pharmacy (CSHP), FIP is hosting the “Inside Canada’s hospitals” visit as part of the 2026 FIP world congress experience in Montreal.

This full-day programme provides a unique opportunity to explore innovations in pharmacy practice and hospital care in Quebec. The day will begin with a plenary session at the CHUM, followed by guided visits to the CHU Sainte-Justine and Centre universitaire de santé McGill - McGill University Health Centre , three of the leading academic hospitals across the city.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience firsthand innovative approaches to clinical pharmacy practice, automation, sterile compounding, medication-use systems, quality improvement, research and interprofessional care.

Pharmacists should be empowered to lead evidence-based pharmaceutical product selection, including generic substitution and therapeutic interchange, to improve access to medicines, strengthen health system resilience and optimise patient outcomes, according to a new FIP Statement of Policy released today: https://www.fip.org/file/6654.

Replacing FIP’s 2018 policy on pharmacists’ authority in pharmaceutical product selection, the statement reflects developments in regulatory science, the growing use of generic and biosimilar medicines, digital health technologies, medicine shortages and the need for sustainable, people-centred health care.

The policy recognises pharmaceutical product selection as a key clinical responsibility of pharmacists. Where permitted by national legislation, pharmacists should be able to apply evidence-based clinical judgement to optimise medicine use, maintain continuity of care and support equitable access to treatment.

An artificial intelligence (AI)-driven virtual patient simulation is being explored as a new way to strengthen medication counselling in community pharmacies. Osama El-Kilani, department manager at Nordhavn Pharmacy and founder of PharmaAI Consulting, Denmark, presented a poster at the FIP congress this week.

His work focuses on creating realistic patient interactions with different medication histories and adherence challenges and responses. Pharmacists can practise counselling and receive automated feedback on communication and clinical decision-making. Tested in Danish community pharmacies, the project reported a 23.4% increase in medication counselling activity, while participating colleagues gave positive feedback on the training experience.

FIP is proud to take part in the Global Week for Action on Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) 2026, joining advocates, communities and organisations worldwide in calling for stronger action on NCD prevention, treatment and care.

NCDs, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and mental health conditions, are the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. With fewer than five years remaining to reach the 2030 global NCD targets, this year's campaign, held under the theme "Time to lead," calls for political commitments to be turned into concrete action, investment and measurable progress. As a full member of the NCD Alliance, FIP reinforces its commitment to NCD prevention and care and to recognising pharmacists as essential partners in the global NCD response.

Pharmacists should play a greater role in preventing substance use disorders (SUDs), supporting early intervention and reducing harms associated with the non-medicinal use of psychoactive substances, according to a new Statement of Policy released today by FIP: https://www.fip.org/file/6653. The statement reflects the latest evidence on prevention, treatment support and evidence-informed harm reduction. It recognises substance use disorders as a major public health challenge and positions pharmacists as essential members of multidisciplinary teams working to improve health outcomes while reducing stigma and barriers to care.

The policy statement, replacing FIP's 2018 Statement of Policy on reducing harm associated with drugs of abuse, adopts a prevention-first, person-centred approach grounded in public health, human rights and social justice. It highlights pharmacists' contributions across the continuum of care—from discouraging the non-medicinal use of psychoactive substances obtained through medical pathways and preventing medicine-related SUDs, to supporting treatment, overdose prevention and evidence-informed harm reduction services where permitted.

Following its launch this week at the 2026 FIP world congress, The FIP Montreal Declaration on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has already been endorsed by 86 FIP Member Organisations. In addition to eight corporate partners and 12 organisations collaborating with FIP.

Together, these organisations are supporting a shared commitment to strengthen pharmacy’s contribution to the prevention and management of NCDs. The Montreal Declaration calls for action to enable pharmacists to practise to the full extent of their expertise — from prevention, screening and early detection to treatment optimisation and long-term NCD management. This growing support marks an important step in FIP’s 2026 advocacy priority on NCDs and demonstrates the power of collective action across the global pharmacy community.
