I had a long, exhausting and painful night, however I knew I was not there yet!
A VICTIM! That’s how I felt! I needed to find a position, breath calmly!! Shower? Ball? Massages? Contractions were beating me!!

What was missing to fully disconnect??

In the next morning, my best friends took Dante to the playground and at the moment I heard the door closing… things immediately got more and more intense!
I needed to be JUST a labouring woman and not a mother! My son was safe and in great hands, so I was safe!!

Things got insanely more intense and there was a moment I naturally started doing the “mooo breathing” and couldn’t live without my husband’s hands pressuring my back and TENS!

Little by little I was not a VICTIM anymore and I felt like: I need to FIGHT and I want to PUSH this pain away! My DOULA mind told me: FIGHT OR FLIGHT? Hello ADRENALINE!! IT IS TIME!! I just asked my midwife for reassurance, I didn’t want numbers, I asked: is this what I think it is? She happily played with me: “what would you tell your clients now? Everything is beautifully ready!!”

Did I consider pain medication?
Yes!!! Minutes before reaching this FIGHTER feeling I thought: “I might need extra help here”!! I can’t describe how this FIGHTER feeling made me feel. It is almost like I felt comfort in feeling the strong contractions!! Does it sound crazy? Maybe!! But that’s how I felt! Diana was very close to come!!

Did I use HYPNOBIRTHING??
Yes!!!! CALM BREATHING was something I consciously did!

J-BREATHING happened without planning and just later I realised I used it!! So nice!!!!

VISUALISATION !!! I didn’t visualise the opening blossom or the baby perfectly positioned like Hypnobirthing suggest!! Instead, when I was under the shower, I remembered of the several powerful clients I saw under the shower, fighting and being amazing!!! When I was on my knees, screaming, breathing.. they all came and gave me strength!
So here is also a BIG THANK U to all of you!!! ❤️

My experienced gave me a lot to think about! Especially on how I want to prepare my clients to live this moment! I want them to LOVE giving birth, just like I did!!
Count on me!!
With love
Karina

From last post
(...) I had a moment of not feeling safe anywhere and the “shared care” option came as a sunshine for me!!

Shared care is when you combine your midwife with hospital care. The most common shared care is the one where pregnancy is assisted by midwife and birth by the hospital. However, I was not comfortable with this!

What I wanted was full midwife care! I didn’t want to be considered a medical case for the system! I realised that having my midwife guiding me in a hospital setting would be the safest I would feel! I couldn’t live with the tiny percentage of uterine rupture and decided not to go for a home birth!

An independent midwife was my best choice!!! I contacted a few who I admire and have worked with; though something inside me told me: I need to be just a woman during this birth experience! Maybe a person who doesn’t know me is what I need! I want my midwife to see me as a woman, not as a doula!

I found the dearest Maaike .vroedvrouwenzorg and I have no words for her! We immediately clicked! She understood my background, my needs! It was so good to talk to her! It was easy to share and open up! Easy to be around!
Maaike - you live forever in our hearts ♥️

The birth preparation with her was about reassuring what my body was able to do, and most specially.. it was about healing! By talking to Maaike (and my doula - who is also forever in our hearts) about my first experience, I can say that - I HEALED!

For me, this was one of the most important things in my preparation for a VBAC! I was not using this second experience to heal from my first… I healed from it during the amazing preparation I had with my team!

So when this second birth started, I was ready to live this experience, whatever the outcome was, whatever nature decided to do! I was completely opened! I embraced this new experience with all my heart and no more things needed to be processed from my first birth!

(to be continued)
❤️

Next post I’ll talk about vulnerability and hypnobirthing!!
Have I thought about pain medication?
Did I use Hypnobirthing?
Did I feel pressure on having a successful VBAC because I am a birth worker?

Diana is one month old and I can say that I was born again! A new, big transformation took over myself. “There is nothing I can’t do” - this was the immediate feeling I had when I got her with my own hands!
Yes, I got her with my own hands. I still remember about her skin, texture and temperature, so warm and so slippery!!! I will never forget these sensations!
I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and she came via the most respectful, powerful and intense VBAC.

As I said before, I will not share details of my experience here and this is not a birth report. As a birth worker I believe we can easily become a model of what is “beautiful”, what is “right”..., when in fact, there is no definition of those things! I wanna talk about things that were important to me in achieving my VBAC, such as:

- shared care and birth preparation;
- pressure on having a beautiful birth because I am a Doula?;
- afraid of giving birth?;
- did I think about requesting pain medication?;
- how did I feel about contractions?;
- how did I feel about birth?;
- did I use Hypnobirthing???

When I got the happy news of my second pregnancy I quickly connected the dots and thought: Who am I to the Dutch obstetric system? What do the protocols say? As a Doula I had all the answers by heart:
- Second time pregnancy - previous c-section - medical case - hospital birth.

Again as a Doula, I was aware of all this before being pregnant! I also knew I had 70% of chances of a successful VBAC, which I was very happy and confident about! However, the remaining 30% needed a lot of preparation and care!
I started my research!

Initially all I had in mind was a home birth! After talking to one or other person, my intuition got confused and I considered a hospital birth… but, I don’t like the medical setting!! I had a moment of not feeling safe anywhere and the “shared care” option came as a sunshine for me!!

Have you heard about shared care?
I’ll talk about this in the next post!

A few more memories of a short time ago!
Diana’s pregnancy went so so fast and I love looking back to this journey!!
There were ups and downs, level of energy close to zero, health issues until week 25ish..
On the other hand, there were happy, beautiful moments and above all, a big confidence growing and growing inside me!
When I see these photos, that’s mostly what I remember about this pregnancy!

Little did we know!!!

These photos were taken on July, 5th. I was 35+6days!
Who would imagine that a week later my waters would break and Diana would be on the edge of premature/term and baby?

I got scared to death! So many things crossed my mind: “this is not the best start ever!” “Is she ready for this?” “Why does she want to come so early?” “Is she strong enough to rotate and to handle contractions?”

As soon as I feel ready, I’ll share more here!

For now, I’ll share these lovely pictures! I love looking at them!
