Siobhan had her knee replaced in March. By June, she was back in the sea.

She lives near Lahinch. Swimming in the Atlantic was something she'd done her whole life β€” until her knee made it impossible. Getting in and out of the water, the uneven stones, the cold. All of it became too much.

She'd been on the Irish waiting list for 14 months with no clear end date.

Her son found us, she came to Amsterdam, the surgery took 90 minutes. She was walking the hospital corridor the next morning.

If you're waiting and wondering whether to look at other options β€” we're worth a call.

She didn't mention the pain much anymore. That's what worried her daughter.

When someone stops complaining about something that was clearly hurting them β€” sometimes it's because it got better. And sometimes it's because they've stopped expecting it to.

A lot of older people reach a point where they just absorb the pain. They sleep less. They go out less. They sit more. And they tell themselves it's just age.

It isn't always just age.

If your mum or dad seems to have quietly accepted a life that's much smaller than it used to be β€” it might be worth gently asking how their hips or knees are doing.

πŸ‘‰ dhkc.nl β€” you can also reach out on their behalf.

What exactly is osteoarthritis β€” and why does it cause so much pain?

The cartilage in your hip or knee acts like a shock absorber. When it wears down over time, bone starts rubbing against bone. That's what causes the deep, constant ache β€” and the stiffness that's worst in the morning or after sitting.

It's not caused by something you did wrong. It's one of the most common conditions in people over 60, and it's progressive β€” meaning it tends to get worse, not better, on its own.

The good news: it's also one of the most treatable. Hip and knee replacements have been performed for over 50 years and the outcomes are consistently good for the right patients.

If your GP has mentioned osteoarthritis, or if you're getting X-rays that show joint wear β€” it might be worth speaking to a specialist.

Eileen from Galway sent us a message six months after her hip replacement.

She said she'd spent the morning in her garden β€” something she hadn't been able to do for three years.

Not a big trip. Not a marathon. Just her garden, on a Tuesday morning, doing what she loves.

That's what this surgery gives most people. Not a dramatic new life β€” just their old one back.

If you've been waiting to feel ready, or waiting to see if the pain gets better on its own β€” it might be worth having a conversation with us first.

We see Irish patients every month. We know the process. We'll tell you honestly whether you're a good candidate.

"I haven't been able to sleep on my left side for two years."

That's what one of our patients from Limerick told us on his first call.

Not the pain itself β€” but the small things it takes away. The position you can't sleep in. The shoes you can no longer tie yourself. The bus you stopped taking because the steps are too much.

Hip and knee wear doesn't announce itself dramatically. It creeps. And at some point, without quite deciding to, you've reorganised your whole life around avoiding pain.

If that sounds familiar β€” you don't have to keep adapting. There's another option.

Ireland vs. Amsterdam β€” the honest comparison πŸ‘‡

If you're an Irish public patient considering hip or knee replacement, here's what the two options actually look like side by side:

πŸ₯ IRISH HSE PUBLIC SYSTEM

🦴 Anterior hip approach: Limited availability
πŸ‹οΈ Physio after surgery: Variable, often delayed
πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Surgeon contact: Limited
🏨 Recovery hotel: Not available
πŸ’Ά Cost to you: €0 (if you wait years)

πŸ‡³πŸ‡± DUTCH HIP & KNEE CLINIC β€” Amsterdam (via Cross Border Directive)
⏳ Wait time: 4–6 weeks from first contact
πŸ’³ Private insurance: NOT needed
🦴 Anterior hip approach: Standard
πŸ‹οΈ Physio: Daily, from day 1 at Kim Zorghotel
πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Surgeon contact: Personal, before and after
🏨 Recovery hotel: Included

The only thing you pay for: your flights (typically €150–300 return from Dublin).

To the sons and daughters of parents who are suffering in silence πŸ‘‡

We hear it every week.

"My mum keeps saying her knee isn't that bad yet."
"Dad won't make a fuss."
"She stopped coming on family walks but says she's fine."

Older Irish people are remarkably good at normalising pain. They stop doing things gradually β€” first the long walks, then the stairs, then coming to family events β€” without always realising how much they've given up.

But as a family member, you can often see it more clearly than they can.

If your parent or relative has been living with hip or knee pain for months or years, here's what we'd gently suggest:

1. Ask them β€” directly β€” how the pain has been
2. Mention that there are options that don't involve years of waiting
3. Suggest they bring it up at their next GP appointment
4. Or contact us yourself β€” we're happy to talk to family members too

At the Dutch Hip & Knee Clinic in Amsterdam, we've helped hundreds of Irish patients get their lives back. Most of them were nudged by a son, a daughter, or a partner who noticed the change before they did.

The HSE Cross Border Directive means the cost is covered. The only thing standing between them and a pain-free life is a conversation.

5 signs your hip or knee pain has gone beyond "just getting older" πŸ‘‡

If you recognise 3 or more of these, it may be time to talk to your GP about surgery:

1️⃣ PAIN THAT DOESN'T REST
Your hip or knee hurts even when you're sitting or lying down. It wakes you up at night.

2️⃣ MORNING STIFFNESS THAT DOESN'T GO AWAY
More than 30 minutes of stiffness after getting up. Joints that need to "warm up" before you can move normally.

3️⃣ YOU'VE CHANGED HOW YOU MOVE
You avoid stairs. You hold onto things. You've stopped walks you used to do. You've adapted your life around the pain.

4️⃣ PHYSIO AND INJECTIONS HAVE STOPPED HELPING
You've tried the conservative options β€” they worked for a while, but not anymore.

5️⃣ YOUR X-RAY SHOWS BONE-ON-BONE
The cartilage is gone. The joint is worn. A replacement is the medically appropriate next step.

If this sounds like you β€” or someone you love β€” the HSE waiting list doesn't have to be the only option.

At the Dutch Hip & Knee Clinic in Amsterdam, we assess and operate on Irish patients every week.

A lot of people ask us: "How does it actually work?"

Here's the honest 5-step answer for anyone in Ireland considering hip or knee replacement at the Dutch Hip & Knee Clinic in Amsterdam:

2️⃣ WE REVIEW YOUR CASE
Send us your referral and any recent X-rays. Our surgeon assesses remotely. No need to travel for a consultation first.

3️⃣ WE HANDLE THE HSE PAPERWORK

Dublin to Amsterdam Schiphol is under 2 hours. We meet you, sort your transfers, and support you throughout your stay.

5️⃣ HOME WITHIN 5 DAYS

Did you know the average wait for hip or knee replacement surgery in Ireland is now 3 to 4 years? πŸ˜”

While you're waiting, the joint keeps deteriorating. Pain gets worse. Mobility decreases. Quality of life suffers.

But there's a legal right most Irish patients don't know about.

The EU Cross Border Directive allows you to get your surgery in the Netherlands β€” and the HSE refunds the cost. No private insurance needed.

At the Dutch Hip & Knee Clinic in Amsterdam, Irish patients are seen within weeks β€” not years.

βœ… HSE-funded via Cross Border Directive
βœ… Under 2 hours from Dublin by plane
βœ… World-class Dutch orthopaedic surgeons
βœ… Recovery at the Kim Zorghotel included
βœ… Back home within 5 days
