Povidone Iodine is still widely used in many areas of the world . While there has been some debate about its cytotoxicity, more recent studies have shown that it is safe and effective as a topical antimicrobial. However, it should always be used in conjunction with antimicrobial stewardship principles. In most countries it is available in most stores, even grocery stores, while in other parts of the world , like Scandinavia, it is sold by doctors prescription only .
