📍 NIOM in Oslo, Norway, invites applications for its 2026 Visiting Scientist Programme – open to early-career researchers, PhD students, and established scientists.

🧫 Research areas may include biological, chemical, physical, or clinical aspects of dental biomaterials. Positions are funded for 3–6 months, and collaborative project planning with NIOM experts is part of the stay.

Positions as visiting scientists are yearly offered at NIOM in Oslo, Norway. It is now time to apply for the positions available for visits during 2027, within research in the field of biological, chemical, physical, and clinical questions related to biomaterials and oral health.

Last week, we said thank you and farewell to Frode Staxrud who has now retired after many years of collaboration and contributions to NIOM.

Although Frode joined NIOM as a permanent employee in 2018, his connection to the institute goes much further back. He became involved in research projects at NIOM as early as 2008 and has since played an important role in both research and knowledge dissemination.

Alongside his work at NIOM, Frode has had a long career as a practising dentist, instructor dentist, university lecturer and associate professor. Throughout the years, he has generously shared his knowledge with colleagues, students and clinicians alike.

Frode’s expertise in minimal invasive dentistry, bonding and composite restorations has made him a highly regarded researcher and lecturer. Equally important, however, has been his positive attitude, sense of humour and willingness to support those around him.

We would like to thank Frode for his dedication, professionalism and many valuable contributions to NIOM over the years.

We wish him all the best in the years ahead.

Hvorfor er munnhelse så viktig – og hva kan du selv gjøre for å forebygge problemer?

I denne podcast-episoden deler Aida Gacic Mulic, seniorforsker og professor ved NIOM NIOM, sin kunnskap om hvordan god munnhelse påvirker både helse, livskvalitet og hverdagen vår. Temaet er særlig relevant for personer som gjennomgår kreftbehandling, men rådene gjelder også for resten av befolkningen.

Samtalen med Maria Charlott Våde fra KreftKompasset handler blant annet om hvordan man kan forebygge karies, hvorfor munntørrhet øker risikoen for tannproblemer, og hvilke tiltak som kan bidra til å bevare god oral helse over tid. Episoden gir også nyttige perspektiver for både pårørende og helsepersonell som ønsker å støtte personer med utfordringer knyttet til munnhelse.

Aida formidler forskningsbasert kunnskap på en måte som er lett å forstå, og deler konkrete råd som kan gjøre en forskjell i hverdagen.

Congratulations to Sama Suliman, who recently defended her PhD thesis, Erbium Laser for Ceramic Restoration Retrieval, at Turun yliopisto - University of Turku. NIOM CEO, Professor Per Vult von Steyern served as opponent during the defence.

The thesis investigates how Er:YAG lasers can be used to remove ceramic restorations such as zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns. These materials are known for their strength and durability, making conventional removal procedures demanding for both clinicians and patients.

The research shows that erbium laser technology may provide a more conservative and efficient method for restoration retrieval, reducing the risk of damage to the underlying tooth.

Congratulations on a successful defence and an important contribution to the field.

NIOM’s accreditation has been renewed for another five years.

The renewal confirms continued confidence in NIOM’s laboratory work, competence and quality systems, while ensuring that accredited testing services remain available to industry and research partners.

“This is the result of long-term and systematic quality work. NIOM has highly skilled employees with broad expertise and extensive knowledge in their respective fields. The renewal demonstrates that we perform testing to a high standard and in accordance with international requirements,” says Quality Manager at NIOM Inger Sofie Dragland.

NIOM CTO Hilde Molvig Kopperud adds:

"Our clients can obtain accredited test results for regulatory purposes, including submissions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to Notified Bodies operating under the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR). For many of the companies and organisations we work with, this is a key requirement."

Vi snakker mye om forskningsetikk i form av regler og retningslinjer. Men kanskje handler det først og fremst om kultur?

I dette intervjuet med Bjørn Hofmann snakker vi om hvorfor forskningsetikk ikke bare er et spørsmål om regelverk, men også om åpenhet, ansvar og måten vi møter hverandre på i forskningshverdagen.

Samtalen berører blant annet tillit, kollegialitet, pasientsikkerhet og hvordan forskningsmiljøer kan bygge en kultur der det er rom for å stille spørsmål – også de vanskelige.

For forskningsinstitutter som NIOM er dette avgjørende: God forskning handler ikke bare om resultater, men også om hvordan resultatene blir til.
