On Trainers' Day in Riga, the certified trainer and therapist Eduardo Verdu gave an exceptional lecture from Norway that transformed many concepts about psychodrama. He spoke about the spirit of practice and the essence of what we do as trainers and therapists, and invited us to move from function to meaning, from method to mystery, and from performance to genuine presence.
He began by talking about the encounter, saying it is the heart of psychodrama and a sacred risk—(when one human being meets another without masks, manipulation, or fear)—in that moment, true transformation happens, just as Moreno said: "A meeting of two: eye to eye, face to face." He added that the trainer is a living bridge of presence, and that their authenticity and courage in holding the space of uncertainty are what allow real encounters to flourish.
He then moved to the moment, describing it as the crack in the expected flow of life, where spontaneity, creativity, and healing surge forth. He referred to Daniel Stern, who called it the "now moment"—a moment that cannot be pre-trained, that opens up and takes us if we are present enough. He emphasized that healing happens in a second that opens like a gateway, and we prepare for it through presence, attunement, and humility.
He spoke about Chronos and Kairos: Chronos is the time of clocks and calendars—linear and dead time—while Kairos is living time, the right moment, the sacred now where time expands and miracles happen. Chronos builds the stage, and Kairos opens the gateway. To be a psychodramatist is to live on that threshold and to dance in Kairos to awaken the self-healing center within every soul.
He then spoke about the rabbit hole—the threshold where time bends and the personal becomes mythical. It is an invitation to descend beyond narrative, into the symbolic act that no one planned. It leads us to the wound that still speaks, and to the place where psychodrama ceases to be a technique and becomes a ritual.
Finally in closing, he asked: What do we do when we train???? And he answered that we do not just teach methods—we prepare ourselves and our students to recognize the sacred choreography: the encounter, the moment, Chronos and Kairos, and the rabbit hole. We become directors of time, facilitators of descent, and guardians of what cannot be repeated.
He also spoke about five interconnected skills: authenticity as the foundation, trust built upon it, pushing the process forward, challenge within safety, and finally, change, integration, and closure. These elements are a dynamic, cyclical process.
