Hypermobility means joints have a larger range of motion, less passive stability, and sometimes reduced proprioception. In winter sports like skating or cross-country skiing, joints need to respond to unstable surfaces, high speeds, and sudden changes of direction. This requires constant muscle activation – without ligament support, there’s a higher risk of overextension or injury, especially when muscles are tired.
If hypermobility is something you notice in yourself, don’t worry – there are ways to prepare your body for the unpredictability of winter sports. Pilates, strength training, and isometric exercises help improve muscle control and stability, so you can simply enjoy new experiences and beautiful views. ☺️
