My name is Amalia Fonfara, I was born and raised in Greenland and Denmark, and have lived in Norway since 2010. I work as a visual artist and shamanic practitioner in Trondheim. I am co-founder of the platform Invisibledrum, an international and interdisciplinary research platform that investigates animism and spiritual technologies within art and social-ecological systems. Both as an artist and a

shamanic practitioner, my heartfelt wish is to enliven and raise awareness of the connection within ourselves and to all Life we are surrounded by. Through the deep soul work of shamanic practice, I experience how we, in cooperation with the invisible world, can heal traumas and wounds that we carry individually and collectively, so that we can feel our deep connection to Mother Earth and the cosmos.

I am so grateful to be able to once more offer The Path of Seiðr in September in one of my favorite places here in Trøndelag, Norway.

Last time, when we finished the course, a huge orca surfaced just at the shoreline. It was such a powerful reminder that the work we do, recalming our ancestors’ sacred traditions, vibrates and resonates into the whole web of life way beyond our own human perception.

Redwoods, Redwoods, the ancient ones called me 🙏

My whole life, I always wanted to go and meet these incredible beings, but I always felt it needed to be for a special purpose.

Now it will happen🙏

Next April I will be going to California to teach Seidr. I will be living next to them on the land.

I can not imagine a better purpose than to go there rooted in my ancestors' tradition of Seidr – a path and practice woven with the power of the world tree Yggdrasil – to meet these ancient ones on earth 🌳🌳🙏

I thank my ancestors for showing me my path. There is no life without your love 🤍

Ùteseta er en eldgammel magisk tradisjon som ble praktisert av våre forfedre før den ble forbudt ved innføringen av kristendommen i Norden. Formålet med utesitting er å sitte ute for å få visdom og hjelp til livets overganger og utfordringer.

Å gjøre utesitting er et hellig ritual der du åpner sinnet ditt for livsvævets kraft og visdom og lar det gi deg svar på det du bærer med deg. Dette kan være store spørsmål i livet, hvor du trenger å finne styrke og hjelp til å gå veien din, nye faser i livet eller å bli gjeninnsatt i livets kredsløp etter sykdom og tab.

På dette utesittingkurset vil du få en innføring i denne oldnordiske sjamanistiske tradisjonene. Du vil få muligheten til å gjøre en tradisjonell utesitting, hvor du jobber ut fra hva du selv trenger å «møte» og få innsikt i.

This solstice I was invited to do a namegiving ceremony for a little child welcoming him into our community.

The Nafnfesting ritual is called Ausa Vàtni in Norse. Traditionally the ritual was done at a lake, at the sea or other natural pools of water where the child was born. It is customary to sprinkle water on the child and announce the name of the child with witnesses.

This Nafnfesting was done at a beautiful lake by the family’s home. Family, friends and a few fourlegged members of the family were all gathered to witness and celebrate.

After the naming ritual another traditional Norse custom was preformed called “knesetting” (kneesitting). “Knesetting” is a ritual where the father of the child sits the child on his knee. It means that the child is accepted into the family by the father, and officially inherits the name, protection and power of the family line.
Afterwards people offer gifts and blessings to the child, for love, prosperity and protection. 🙏

It was such a special and moving day full of joy and love.
I feel so honoured and blessed to do this special work where the bridge between the spiritworld, the land and our human community is woven together in love and care 🤍

I thank all you beautiful people I meet on my path, for trusting in my work. And I thank my ancestors for calling me on this path - a path full of love and transformation 🤍 May it continue to deepen and grow 🌳🙏

I am starting to feel home in this realm, after a week of journeying into the Norse magic tradition of Seidr together with a group of powerful women who came all the way from California and Canada, to connect with our ancestral shamanic tradition. 🔥

One of the women with Scottish ancestry brought her kilt to the circle. A kilt that was recently created by Witches of Scotland as a tribute to the victims of the witch trials and persecution, designed to keep their stories alive and honor them.

Having worked intensively with the witch trials here in Norway in my artistic practice and learning that I have Scottish/Irish ancestry myself, I became very silent when I stood in front of the woven tartan of this kilt.

Seeing this piece of carefully, intentionally woven fabric reminded me of the cruel horrors of our history. And at the same time, it reminded me of something the ancestors told me about working with Seidr. The love and gratefulness they hold for us for the work we are doing by bringing our ancestors’ sacred traditions back into our human world. 🤍

It is really beyond words to speak about the ritual Seidr, but one thing I continuously experience is the opening of dimensions beyond time and space, where we become one with our ancestral memory.

The unseen becomes visible and tangible as the veil of magic surrounds us in the trance, and the presence of ancestral energy and the ancient gods is silent and clear.

As we weave the threads in the Seid, we heal ourselves, our community, and our history. May it continue to grow and bloom. 🤍🙏

Today I gave a talk about animism and the old Norse magic practice of Seidr in a local church here in Trondheim.

It is the first time I have talked about my work within a Christian community and space. I was greeted with an engaged audience and a lot of questions about the old ways, what christianity is to a heathern today, and whether it is possible to be connected to both. Many questions that I do not have the answers to, but that I am sure many of you all have answers to.

Afterwards, I went to sit with an old rooted friend in the forest to process.

It is strange to experience how history has changed. Some few hundred years ago I would have been burned or hanged for standing in a church and talking about being a Vølve and Åndemaner with my drum and staff. Singing and playing the drum calling to the land spirits to come forth.

Knowing how my ancestors, and my brothers and sisters from indigenous cultures here in the North and Arctic, have been persecuted and killed for our beliefs and sacred knowledge traditions, I feel so deeply grateful and humble for being able to live in a world where I am free to practice what spirit teaches me. It is not given and many places in the world today it is certainly still not possible.

To me and many other deeply committed practitioners I know, it is with great respect and honour that we carry the traditions our ancestors have kept hidden and sacred, because their lives were taken for it.

May we always remember to honor this when we walk in the footsteps of our ancestral traditions with the Land 🤍
