Adhikmaas (Malamas / Purushottam Month):
Scriptural, Astrological, Social, and Environmental Significance
The short-term and long-term time calculation systems followed in Hindu Sanatan Dharma are highly scientific and deeply connected with nature. One remarkable and important part of this system is Adhik Maas. In common language, it is called Malamas, while in religious terminology it is known as Purushottam Maas.
Below is an informative article covering the various dimensions of this sacred month that has begun today:
1. How Does Adhik Maas Occur? (Astrological and Scientific Basis)
Adhik Maas is not based on superstition; rather, it is entirely founded on astronomical and mathematical calculations. Its origin lies in the difference between the movements of the Sun and the Moon.
Solar Year
A Solar Year is the time taken by the Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun. It is approximately 365 days and 6 hours.
Lunar Year
A Lunar Year is based on the lunar tithis (from Pratipada to Full Moon and New Moon). A Lunar Year is approximately 354 days.
The Main Difference
Thus, there is a difference of about 11 days between the Solar Year and the Lunar Year every year.
As this difference accumulates annually, within nearly three years it becomes approximately 33 days, which is slightly more than one month. To balance the lunar calendar with the solar cycle and seasons, an extra month is added to the Panchang approximately every 32 months, 16 days, and 4 ghadis. This additional month is called Adhik Maas.
Month Without Sankranti
According to astrology, if within a lunar month the Sun does not transit from one zodiac sign to another (Sankranti does not occur), that month is called Adhik Maas. Since there is no Sankranti in that month, it came to be known as “Mala Month” (Malamas).
2. Scriptural Basis and the Naming of “Purushottam Maas”
According to Puranic belief, every month has a presiding deity. However, since Adhik Maas is an extra month without Sankranti, no deity was willing to become its ruler. The gods considered it impure and neglected it.
Feeling sorrowful, Malamas approached Lord Vishnu and prayed for deliverance. Lord Vishnu understood its suffering and granted it His supreme title, “Purushottam.” He declared:
> “From now onward, I Myself shall be your presiding deity. The devotion, worship, charity, and spiritual practices performed during this month shall yield manifold greater results than in any other month.”
Therefore, scripturally this month attained the exalted status of Purushottam Maas.
3. Importance and Special Significance of Adhik Maas
Balance of Time and Seasons
Adhik Maas prevents the Hindu calendar and seasonal cycles from drifting apart. Without this adjustment, festivals such as Dashain and Tihar would gradually shift away from their proper seasons.
A Time of Spiritual Energy
This month is considered especially suitable for rising above material pursuits and focusing on spiritual purification and devotion to God.
Accumulation of Merit (Punya)
According to the Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapurana and Purushottam Mahatmya, even small virtuous deeds performed during this month grant imperishable spiritual merit.
4. Recommended and Prohibited Activities During This Period (With Reasons)
Adhik Maas is considered unsuitable for Kamya Karma (actions performed for material desires or worldly gains), but highly auspicious for Nitya and Naimittika Karma (daily duties and spiritual practices).
What Should Be Done?
Worship of Lord Vishnu or Krishna
Perform puja, chanting, bhajans, and devotional practices dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna.
Reading Sacred Scriptures
Recitation and listening to texts such as:
Shrimad Bhagavatam
Bhagavad Gita
Purushottam Mahatmya
Charity and Donations
Offering food, clothes, and charity to the poor, needy, and Brahmins is highly meritorious. A traditional practice includes donating 33 Malpuas placed on a bronze plate.
Fasting and Discipline
Following a sattvic diet, observing celibacy, and in some cases sleeping on the ground are considered spiritually beneficial.
What Should Not Be Done? (And Why?)
Marriage, Sacred Thread Ceremony, and Housewarming
These ceremonies are connected with worldly prosperity and material growth. Since Adhik Maas lacks the usual solar transitions associated with auspicious worldly progress, such rituals are generally avoided.
Beginning New Construction or Major Investments
Starting the construction of a house, laying the foundation of a major business, or making large financial investments is considered unfavorable during this period.
Temple Consecration or Large Ritual Sacrifices
Consecration of new temples or performing desire-oriented yajnas are usually postponed.
The Reason
The spiritual energy of Adhik Maas is reserved for inner growth, spiritual accumulation, and mental peace, rather than material expansion or worldly ambition.
5. Environmental Significance
Vedic tradition closely aligns human life with the rhythms of nature. From an environmental perspective, Adhik Maas has profound importance:
Preservation of Seasonal Cycles
Without harmonizing the lunar and solar calendars, agricultural timings and seasonal cycles would become disordered. Adhik Maas helps maintain alignment between months, seasons, and farming activities.
A Period of Rest for Nature
During this month, people traditionally avoid large-scale material activities, deforestation, and extensive ritualistic consumption. In a sense, it offers both humans and nature a temporary period of rest, supporting ecological balance.
6. Social Importance
Social Harmony and Charity
The emphasis on donations during Adhik Maas encourages helping the poor and underprivileged through food, clothing, and financial support. This nurtures compassion and reduces social inequality.
Mental and Family Rejuvenation
People temporarily withdraw from worldly rush, celebrations, and social extravagance. Families spend time together listening to spiritual discourses and engaging in satsang, which strengthens relationships and reduces mental stress.
Pilgrimage and Religious Tourism
During Adhik Maas, fairs and gatherings are held at various sacred pilgrimage sites in Nepal, such as Machhenarayan in Kathmandu and several Triveni Dhams. This promotes domestic religious tourism, local trade, and social interaction.
Conclusion
Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas is not merely an extra month; it represents the remarkable blend of astronomical science, natural harmony, and spiritual wisdom developed by our ancestors. It offers humanity an opportunity to step away from material exhaustion, reconnect with spiritual energy, and realign with the rhythms of nature.
Therefore, rather than neglecting it as “Malamas,” one should honor it as Purushottam Maas and dedicate this sacred period to spiritual growth, social welfare, and inner peace.
