I grew up in a village in Mahottari, Nepal.

No famous school. No foreign-funded institution.

Just a community that decided their children deserved an education — and built one themselves.

That school sent me to college in Janakpur. That college sent me to medical school. Today, I'm a cancer specialist in the United States.

And now I'm building Binaytara Cancer Hospital back home — because the same communities that invested in me deserve world-class healthcare.

But here's what troubles me:

Nepal has been importing models of civil society for decades — NGOs, donor frameworks, foreign aid structures — while quietly forgetting that we already had our own.

The Guthi system. Dhikuri. Parma. Community trusts that governed Kathmandu Valley's art, architecture and social welfare for over 1,000 years — without a single dollar of foreign funding.

We didn't need to import. We needed to remember.

I wrote about this in Nagarik newspaper this week. The argument is simple:

→ If Nepali communities built schools without foreign donors, they can build hospitals too
→ Our tax laws need to actually reward local philanthropy
→ Cancer hospital approvals cannot move at the speed of a routine development project — delays kill people
→ Small community organizations and large INGOs should not be regulated identically

Nepal doesn't have a capacity problem. It has a policy problem.
