A notable development in optometry and neuro-ophthalmology: on August 21, 2026, the U.S. FDA granted De Novo authorization to Avulux, a precision optical filter designed to reduce the impact of light sensitivity (photophobia) associated with episodic migraine in people aged 12 years and older.
Unlike ordinary tinted lenses, Avulux selectively filters specific wavelengths, including around 480 nm and 590 nm.
๐ง The technology is based on growing evidence that retinal pathways, including melanopsin-containing ipRGCs, may play a role in migraine-related photophobia.
Importantly, Avulux is an optical medical deviceโnot a migraine drugโand does not cure or prevent migraine. Clinical evidence is promising but still developing.
A fascinating example of how optics, retinal physiology and neuroscience intersect. ๐๏ธ๐ง
