It is truly an honor to represent Nepal at the 58th Annual Meeting of ESPGHAN, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious conferences in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, held in Lille, France.

Although I was unable to attend the meeting in person due to personal reasons, I am delighted that two of my abstracts—focusing on Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Pediatric Portal Hypertension—were accepted and presented as E-posters at this international forum.

I hope these contributions will help highlight the burden, clinical spectrum, and unique challenges of Pediatric IBD and Portal Hypertension in Nepal, while increasing global awareness of these important conditions in our region.

I would also like to sincerely thank Dr. Madan for kindly providing this photograph.

🌍 World Liver Day 2026
👶 Healthy Liver, Healthy Childhood

As a pediatric hepatologist, I see every day how liver health in children shapes their future. The truth is simple—a healthy liver begins early in life.

💚 What parents need to know:

🔹 Start early
A child’s liver health begins from infancy. Good nutrition, timely vaccination, and healthy habits lay the foundation for lifelong well-being.

🔹 Prevention matters
✔️ Vaccinate against Hepatitis A & B
✔️ Avoid unnecessary medications and self-medication
✔️ Consider early screening when advised

🔹 Watch lifestyle trends
Childhood obesity is rising—and so is fatty liver disease (MASLD).
👉 Encourage outdoor play
👉 Reduce sugary drinks and processed foods

🔹 Recognize early warning signs
Don’t ignore:
⚠️ Persistent jaundice
⚠️ Poor growth
⚠️ Recurrent vomiting or abdominal distension

Early consultation can change outcomes.

🔹 Every stage counts
From neonatal cholestasis to adolescent fatty liver—liver health evolves with age, and continuity of care is crucial.

🔹 It takes a team
Parents, pediatricians, and specialists must work together to protect these small but vital organs.

🔹 Nutrition is key
🥛 Breastfeeding in infancy
🥗 Balanced diet as they grow
🚫 Limit junk food and sugary drinks

🔹 Rare diseases exist—and matter
Conditions like biliary atresia, autoimmune hepatitis, and Wilson disease may be silent but serious. Awareness leads to early diagnosis.

🔹 Screen early, treat early
Simple tests can detect liver disease before complications develop—improving long-term outcomes.

🔹 Build habits for life
Healthy habits in childhood = lifelong liver protection.

👉 As caregivers, your role is powerful.
👉 As clinicians, our responsibility is shared.

Let’s protect tiny livers today—for a healthier tomorrow.

It was a wonderful experience being part of the monothematic conference on pediatric cholestasis organized by the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology at PGIMER, Chandigarh. I’m sincerely grateful to Prof. Sadhana Lal and Dr. Keshav for giving me the opportunity to be part of such a high-quality academic program.

One of the highlights for me was listening to Prof. Verkade—widely regarded as the father of modern PFIC and the chair of the ESPGHAN Hepatology Committee. His insights were truly inspiring.

It was also a pleasure reconnecting with my teachers, seniors, colleagues, the PGE team, and juniors, and reliving the memories of my DM residency days.

I genuinely hope that discussions from this conference will translate into earlier diagnosis and better management of cholestatic disorders in children.

At the same time, I would like to respectfully urge the Government of Nepal to consider providing genetic testing free of cost for children from financially constrained families, as access to such diagnostics can significantly impact outcomes.
