(Sharad Ritu)

Healing Gastrointestinal Upset by Ayurveda

Digestive discomfort bloating, acidity, gas, or a general feeling of heaviness is one of the most common complaints in modern life. According to Ayurveda, the ancient healing science of Nepal, most digestive issues stem from a weakened or imbalanced Agni, the digestive fire responsible for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. When Agni is strong, digestion is smooth; when it is weak, undigested food turns into toxins (Ama), leading to discomfort and disease.
The good news is that Ayurveda offers simple, time-tested remedies to restore balance naturally. Here are some gentle, effective tips to soothe your gut and support long-term digestive health.

1. Start the Day with Warm Water
Cold water is believed to dampen digestive fire, while warm water gently kindles it. Drinking a glass of warm water first thing in the morning helps flush the system and prepares the stomach for the day ahead.

2. Wake Up Agni with Ginger
A small slice of fresh ginger with a pinch of rock salt and a few drops of lemon juice, taken before meals, is a classic Ayurvedic appetizer. It stimulates digestive enzymes and helps the body prepare to receive food.
(Those with acidity or ulcers should use ginger cautiously or avoid it.)

3. Sip on CCF Tea
Cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds boiled together in water make a soothing tea known simply as CCF tea. It is widely used in Ayurveda to ease bloating, gas, and general digestive sluggishness, and can be sipped warm throughout the day.

4. Eat Your Biggest Meal at Midday
Just as the sun is strongest at noon, so is the body's digestive fire. Ayurveda recommends eating the largest, heaviest meal of the day around lunchtime, and keeping dinner lighter and earlier in the evening.

5. Don't Overfill the Stomach
A well-known Ayurvedic guideline suggests filling the stomach only about three-quarters full leaving space for food, liquid, and digestion to work efficiently together, rather than eating until completely full.

6. Try Buttermilk After Meals
A small glass of buttermilk (takra) with roasted cumin powder is a traditional post-meal drink believed to aid digestion and support healthy gut flora, especially after a heavy meal.

7. Eat Mindfully
Digestion begins with the mind. Eating slowly, chewing thoroughly, and avoiding distractions like phones or television allows the body to properly signal fullness and digest food more efficiently.

8. Move Gently After Eating
Rather than lying down right after a meal, Ayurveda suggests a short, gentle walk of 10–15 minutes, or sitting in Vajrasana (a kneeling posture), both of which are believed to support the digestive process.

9. Limit Cold, Fried, and Processed Foods
Ice-cold drinks, fried snacks, and heavily processed foods are considered "heavy" and harder for the body to break down. Favor warm, freshly cooked, and lightly spiced meals instead.

10. Consider Traditional Herbal Support
Mild, traditional remedies such as triphala (often taken at night) or a glass of ajwain (carom seed) water are commonly used in Ayurveda to support occasional digestive discomfort and maintain gut balance over time.
