Interesting headline from WorkSafe New Zealand today.
"Hidden hazard: farm safety drive exposes substances risk gap".
⚠️⚠️⚠️
A safety push across sheep, beef and dairy farms has revealed significant gaps in hazardous substances management – and clear, practical ways to fix them, thanks to WorkSafe New Zealand.

Inspectors completed 680 assessments nationwide between October and December 2025. WorkSafe’s project lead, Carl Baker, says the assessments were designed to understand what’s happening on farms, not to catch people out.
“We went in to have honest conversations with farmers and figure out where we can help them lift their game. The response from the sector has been overwhelmingly positive.”

An interesting takeaway - Hazardous substances emerged as the highest-risk area, with 39% of assessments requiring improvement. Of improvement notices issued, 94% related to missing safety data sheets or chemical inventories – a relatively straightforward fix with significant safety benefits.

Most organisations believe they have health and safety under control.

Policies are in place.
Risk registers are up to date.
Training records are complete.

But under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, that is not what is being judged.

What matters is whether those systems actually work in practice.

Our latest white paper, The Illusion of Control, explores the growing gap between “work as imagined” and “work as done” and why that gap is often where both serious harm and director liability begin.

It is a reminder that governance today is no longer about reviewing reports.
It is about verifying reality.

If you are a director, leader, or PCBU, this is worth a read.

Many organisations rely on systems that appear effective on paper. This white paper explores how failures in practice expose directors and PCBUs to risk under HSWA.
