👁️ Intraocular Lens (IOL) Selection in Glaucoma Patients: More Than Just Cataract Surgery

Choosing the right intraocular lens (IOL) in glaucoma patients requires careful consideration beyond visual rehabilitation.

🔹 Monofocal IOLs remain the preferred choice for many glaucoma patients due to their excellent contrast sensitivity and predictable outcomes.

🔹 Premium IOLs (multifocal and extended depth of focus lenses) may reduce spectacle dependence but can decrease contrast sensitivity—an important concern in eyes already affected by glaucoma.

🔹 Toric IOLs are excellent options for correcting astigmatism and can improve visual quality without compromising contrast sensitivity.

🔹 Disease severity, visual field status, optic nerve health, and patient expectations should guide IOL selection.

💡 The goal is not just clearer vision, but the best functional vision for each patient.

Every glaucoma eye is unique—personalized IOL planning is key to long-term visual success.

🏃‍♂️👁️ Is exercise safe if you have glaucoma?

Absolutely. In fact, regular exercise can be beneficial for overall eye health.

But not all exercises are ideal for everyone with glaucoma. Certain activities—especially those involving prolonged head-down positions, heavy straining, or breath-holding—may temporarily increase eye pressure and may need to be modified.

The key isn’t avoiding exercise—it’s choosing the right exercise for your eyes and your health.

If you have glaucoma, speak with your eye care professional about the best exercise plan for you.

🧠👁️ Could a simple vitamin help protect vision in glaucoma?

Emerging research suggests that niacinamide (a form of Vitamin B3) may support retinal ganglion cell health and help improve cellular energy metabolism—two factors that play a key role in glaucoma. While lowering intraocular pressure remains the cornerstone of treatment, scientists are exploring whether niacinamide could become a valuable adjunctive therapy for neuroprotection.

The science is promising, but more clinical studies are needed before routine recommendations can be made.

Glaucoma management is evolving beyond pressure control alone, and nutritional neuroscience is opening exciting new possibilities. 🔬✨

The Public Safety Risk of AI Deepfakes: When AI identity theft becomes a public health risk.

I recently sat down with Mike McRoberts at the National Business Review (NBR) to discuss a sophisticated "deepfake" scam weaponizing my professional likeness to target vulnerable patients.

By "scraping" my clinical YouTube videos, scammers used generative AI to clone my voice and endorse unregulated "miracle cures" for serious eye conditions. This is more than identity theft; it is a threat to patient safety.

The Danger: Patients may delay life-saving treatments for "quick fixes."
The Hurdle: “Dark ads" on social media are invisible to victims and nearly impossible to report through standard tools.
The Impact: This erodes the digital trust essential for modern healthcare.

We need better verification standards and a fast-track for medical professionals to report impersonation.

Thank you to Mike McRoberts and the NBR for helping us warn the public.

Digital trust is the foundation of modern healthcare. We must work together to protect it.

Glaukos recently celebrated their 3 millionth implant! This is a huge milestone and has been responsible for a LOT of people reducing or eliminating their glaucoma medication burden.
There were lots of good articles in the latest MiVision, Glaucoma care is no longer just about protecting the optic nerve; it is about protecting the whole eye over decades of treatment. I am proud to be part of the movement for intervention glaucoma and an accredited istent glaucoma specialist. # glaucoma_nz
