🟡 CAUTION/NUANCE: Midlife sleep struggles may quietly erode women's mental health for years
The damage doesn't stop when the sleepless nights do.
A nine-year study of 574 adults found that sleep problems in midlife predicted significantly lower psychological well-being nearly a decade later - and the effect was notably stronger in women than in men.
This wasn't just poor sleep causing a bad week. Researchers accounted for age, illness, relationship status, and other lifestyle factors, and the pattern held.
Why women?
We don't have a clear answer yet. But hormonal shifts, caregiving pressures, and how women tend to internalise stress likely all play a role.
The bottom line:
If you're a woman in midlife losing sleep regularly, this is worth taking seriously now - not later.
Scientific studies show CBT-I is the most effective insomnia treatment. Talk to a behavioural sleep medicine clinician for evidence-based support that addresses the root cause, not just the symptom.
