What happens to your cycle after a miscarriage

When a pregnancy ends, your body needs time to adjust hormonally. During pregnancy, levels of hCG, progesterone and estrogen rise to support the pregnancy. After a miscarriage, these hormone levels begin to fall as your body returns towards its usual cycle.

hCG is the hormone detected by pregnancy tests. hCG gradually declines after a miscarriage, although it can remain detectable for some time. Higher levels may delay the return of normal ovarian activity, but ovulation can sometimes occur before hCG has completely disappeared.

Progesterone and estrogen hormones also fall after a miscarriage. As hormone levels settle and communication between the brain and ovaries resumes, your body can begin preparing for ovulation again but the timing varies. After an early miscarriage, ovulation can sometimes return within around two weeks. Sometimes it may take several weeks, and the first period often returns within around four to eight weeks.

How quickly your cycle returns can be influenced by factors such as how far along the pregnancy was, how quickly hCG levels fall, your usual cycle pattern and how the miscarriage was managed.

This mama and her family have welcomed two beautiful babies with help from our insemination kit, and after completing their journey, she reached out to us with something incredibly special: unopened syringes and collection cups she no longer needs, hoping they can be passed on to another family still trying to create theirs.

And honestly… this is what Hapū Helpers is all about. 🥹

What this mama is giving out is enough for 3 cycles of insemination. If you’re currently TTC and would benefit from these unopened products, send us a DM. 🤍

What matters most to you in a donor? What might be important to your future child? What questions should you ask now that could make things easier later?
There’s no one “right” way to choose. It’s about understanding your options, thinking about what matters to you and your future family, and making a decision you feel comfortable with.
Our latest Learning Centre article walks through some of the important things to consider when choosing a donor as a solo mum.

Home insemination, sometimes called at-home artificial insemination lets you take a clinical process out of the clinic and put it back in your own bedroom. For many people, that change matters.

Home insemination involves placing s***m from a known donor, a clinic donor, or from your own partner into the va**na (near the cervix) using an artificial insemination syringe. It’s the same biology as natural conception. The only difference is that the s***m doesn’t arrive the usual way.

It works best when you’ve nailed the timing (ovulation tracking matters more here than almost anywhere else) and you’re using fresh, healthy s***m.

One thing to know: the legal landscape in New Zealand is friendly to home insemination, but how you set up your donor agreement matters a lot, especially if you’re using a known donor. We cover that on our website. 🔗 Tap link in bio to continue learning.

Unlike countries like the United States where consumer-facing s***m banks let you browse hundreds of donor profiles online and have a vial shipped to your door, New Zealand clinics run their own donor programmes. You can’t buy donor s***m. It is a criminal offence to give or receive ″valuable consideration″ for human tissue, including s***m.

Find out how using a clinic donor works in New Zealand and compare with using a known donor on our website. 🔗 Tap link in bio.

When you’re trying to conceive, there’s no shortage of information. But it doesn’t always leave you feeling clearer or more confident about what to do next.

We’re exploring the idea of running free, practical TTC workshops.

This workshops would be supportive, inclusive and educational, with no product sales pitch. We’re considering both online and in-person sessions, but before we decide what to offer, we want to hear from the people these workshops are actually for.

Our short questionnaire takes around 30 seconds. You can tell us which topics would be most helpful, how you’d prefer to attend and the biggest challenge you’re facing right now.
