🫁COPD (Mate ia tuku)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also known as chronic lung disease, is a long-term condition that permanently damages the lungs and airways. It affects around 300,000 New Zealanders, with around 14% of adults over 40 living with the condition.

COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in New Zealand, but many people don't realise they have it until the disease has progressed.

Common symptoms include:
✅An ongoing cough
✅Increased mucus or phlegm
✅Breathlessness, particularly during physical activity
✅Wheezing
✅Frequent chest infections

The leading cause of COPD is smoking, 🚬although long-term exposure to dust, chemicals and workplace fumes can also contribute. Symptoms usually develop gradually and are often mistaken as a normal part of aging.
If you have a persistent cough, become short of breath more easily than before, or experience frequent chest infections, it's worth talking to your GP or NP.🩺

🫁Asthma (mate huango)

Asthma is a long-term condition that causes the airways to become inflamed and narrow, making it harder to breathe. It affects around 1 in 8 Kiwi adults.

Asthma symptoms often come and go and can be triggered by colds and flu, pollen, dust mites, mold, pets, cigarette smoke or va**ng, cold weather, exercise and stress.

Around 70–80% of asthma in Aotearoa New Zealand is associated with allergies, and many people with asthma also have hay fever or eczema.

Asthma in tamariki👶
Asthma is one of the most common childhood health conditions in New Zealand, with around one in four tamariki experiencing asthma at some stage during childhood.
Talk to your healthcare provider if your child:
✔️Wheezes or coughs with a cold or after exercise
✔️Coughs during the night
✔️Gets short of breath when exercising
✔️Struggles to keep up with other children during sport or play
✔️Seems unusually tired during physical activity.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help children stay active, healthy and confident. If you or a family member experience any of the above symptoms, it's important to book an appointment with your GP or healthcare provider. 🩺
Asthma can usually be diagnosed with a discussion about your symptoms and simple breathing tests.

NZ Diabetes Screening Changes from 1 July 2026

From 1 July, New Zealand has changed how it diagnoses diabetes to align with international standards. If this change affects you, don’t worry! 🫶 Your body hasn't changed, only the label has.

Identifying diabetes earlier means a person can access support and treatment sooner, helping them stay healthier for longer.

If you have any questions, please speak to your doctor or nurse.

💜New services

We are please to introduce two new services at The Doctors Whangaparāoa.🎉

🌟Cortisone joint injections

Cortisone is a substance similar to a natural steroid hormone produced by the body. Cortisone injections are given into a painful joint, soft tissue or bursae (fluid-filled sacs that cushion spaces around and between your joints, tendons and bones) to reduce pain and swelling.

They're used in conditions such as bursitis, frozen shoulder, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff damage, tennis elbow and trigger finger. They provide short-term pain relief, usually for up to a month, but don't cure the problem or improve joint function or stiffness.

🌟Minor surgical procedures

We now offer minor surgical procedures in-practice, including:

✔️Skin cancer and skin lesion biopsies and removal

✔️Excision of sebaceous cysts and lipomas

✔️ Incision and drainage of boils or abscesses

✔️Cryotherapy - using liquid nitrogen to freeze and remove warts, skin tags, and verrucae.

From all of us at The Doctors, we wish you and your loved ones a beautiful Matariki weekend.
