Outside The Box Caskets A casket that tells their story. Personal, design-led caskets made in NZ using sustainable materials. Available through funeral directors. No plastic. No metal.

Not everyone wants a traditional send-off. Outside The Box Caskets are for people who want something different — simple, sustainable and personal. Made in New Zealand from 100 percent biodegradable, recycled cardboard. No MDF. Just clean design, honest materials, and a lighter footprint on the planet. They are blank canvases that can be personalised to reflect the life they honour. Certified for green burials and cremation, and permitted for use with pallbearers, Outside The Box Caskets are available at funeral homes across the country.

Mary from sent us these from a natural burial at Mākara in Wellington, with our Kererū Forest casket last week.

She told us something we hadn’t thought of.

“The jute handles make it possible to have more than one pallbearer per handle. We had some of the younger grandkids doubling up and that worked well.”

Little ones usually can’t help carry a casket and a traditional casket is too heavy. Ours are about 20kg lighter and with the jute handles two grandkids can share one.

Spot the caskets!

This is a page from a kids' book I wrote and illustrated in 2022, in the middle of COVID. It's called Go Girl, Go! and it's about real women I know, what they dreamed of doing as little girls and the careers they have now.

I'm in it too. That's me at my desk, with a chair I designed on one screen and the casket I designed on the other. Which is pretty much my job. 😄

Today is International Day of the Girl, so it felt like the day to share it. I made the book because I want young girls to know they can do anything. Even design caskets!

A Graceful Undertaking took one of our caskets to the Dying Matters expo in Whangarei.

Most cardboard caskets end up going one of two ways. Cheap and flimsy, boxy and flat, or dressed up to look like a traditional timber casket, hiding what they're actually made from.

We didn't want either. Our cardboard isn't off-the-shelf packaging material, it's made specifically for our caskets. The board, the colour, the print, they're all part of the design. We own the material, we don't hide it!
