Your child's foot pain is often caused by normal developmental changes, active lifestyles, or something easily treated at home. Common culprits include growth spurts, overuse from running, or minor skin and nail irritations. However, persistent discomfort should be monitored.

The exact cause of the pain usually depends on where it hurts and your child's age:
• Heel Pain (Ages 8–14): The most common culprit here is Sever's Disease (calcaneal apophysitis). This is a harmless inflammation of the heel's growth plate, typically triggered by sports, running, or a sudden growth spurt.
• Pain at Night (Ages 3–12): This is often classified as classic "growing pains," which cause a deep, throbbing ache in the evenings or wake them up at night.
• Toe Pain: This is frequently caused by external irritations, such as an ingrown toenail, a blister, or plantar warts on the bottom of the foot.
• Arch/General Foot Fatigue: Flexible flat feet are very common in toddlers and young children. While rarely painful on its own, it can cause arches to ache or lead to foot fatigue after heavy activity

Hypermobile feet occur when the connective tissues and ligaments in the foot and ankle are overly lax. Common symptoms include chronic ankle instability, collapsed arches (flat feet), heel pain, muscle fatigue, and a high risk of strains. This instability frequently causes pain to radiate upward into the knees, hips, and back.

Key Symptoms to Watch For
- Ankle Instability: Frequent ankle rolling or recurrent sprains due to loose ligaments that fail to secure the joint properly.
- Collapsed Arches: Flat feet are highly common as gravity pulls the unsupported bones downward during weight-bearing activities.
- Heel Pain & Plantar Fasciitis: The muscles and ligaments overwork to compensate for loose joints, leading to intense heel and arch pain, especially after long periods of standing or resting
- Muscle Fatigue & Aches: Muscles in the feet and calves tire out quickly because they are constantly working to stabilize the joints.
- Balance & Coordination Issues: Weakened proprioception (spatial awareness) often results in clumsiness, stumbling, or a history of frequent falls.

I have some exciting news to share — I am now accepting referrals for the assessment of patients with suspected Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), including hypermobile EDS (hEDS).

Assessments will include a comprehensive clinical history and musculoskeletal examination, with consideration of relevant diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses. Where appropriate, I can also provide recommendations for further investigation or specialist referral.

Key Symptoms to Watch For
• Ankle Instability: Frequent ankle rolling or recurrent sprains due to loose ligaments that fail to secure the joint properly.
• Collapsed Arches: Flat feet (pes planus) are highly common as gravity pulls the unsupported bones downward during weight-bearing activities.
• Heel Pain & Plantar Fasciitis: The muscles and ligaments overwork to compensate for loose joints, leading to intense heel and arch pain, especially after long periods of standing or resting
• Muscle Fatigue & Aches: Muscles in the feet and calves tire out quickly because they are constantly working to stabilize the joints.
• Balance & Coordination Issues: Weakened proprioception (spatial awareness) often results in clumsiness, stumbling, or a history of frequent falls.
• Shoe Discomfort: Standard shoes without adequate arch support or firm heel counters cause intense aching and can lead to friction-related calluses.

Why the Whole Body Matters
Because the foot serves as the base of support, hypermobility here rarely stays localized. The constant shifting and rolling inwards of the foot (overpronation) can trigger a chain reaction of pain, leading to strain in the lower legs, knees, hips, and lower back.

Childhood is an important time for the development of feet and problems left untreated can cause pain, deformities, walking abnormalities and prevent children from participating at school and sport, especially when they are still growing.
A foot health check is a good idea if parents are noticing that their children are struggling with flat feet, feet that roll in, poor balance, tripping or poor coordination, foot pain, toe walking, pigeon toes, knock knees or bow legs, growing pains in legs and painful heels.
Children do not often complain about foot pain or problems they are having walking or running, which is why it is so important to get a foot health check and identify any problems early on.
When treated during childhood, problems with feet and legs can help prevent long term problems with back, hip, knee and foot pain in adulthood.

• OUR FEET ARE HOME TO ABOUT A QUARTER OF ALL THE BONES IN OUR BODIES.
• When we’re born, those bones are mostly cartilage.
• The bones in our feet only completely harden around age 21.
• A human foot & ankle is a strong, mechanical structure
o 26 bones
o 33 joints
o 107 ligaments
o 19 muscles and tendons.
• The soles of your feet contain more sweat glands and sensory nerve endings per square centimetre than any other part of the body
• FEET ARE ONE OF THE MOST TICKLISH PARTS OF THE BODY
o Humans have nearly 8000 nerves in our feet
• There are approximately 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet
• THE AVERAGE PERSON WALKS ABOUT 10,000 STEPSIN A DAY
o 241,401 KILOMETERS IN A LIFETIME
o THE EQUIVALENT TO WALKING 4 TIMES AROUND THE EARTH
o During an average day of walking, the total forces on your feet can total hundreds of tons, equivalent to an average of a fully loaded cement truck
• Standing in one spot is far more tiring than walking because the demands are being made on the same few muscles for a longer length of time.
• It’s rare that two feet are exactly the same; one of them is often larger than the other.
• Fingernails and toenails grow faster during hot weather and teenage years
o It takes at least 5-6 months to grow an entirely new toenail. Compared to fingernails, toenails grow much slower-about 1mm/month

Self-care isn’t just about what you do once in a while—it’s the small daily choices that keep you comfortable, confident, and moving. Take a moment to check in with your feet: wear supportive shoes, keep toenails trimmed, moisturize to prevent dryness, and don’t ignore persistent pain. Your body carries you every day, so give it the care it deserves.
International Self-Care Day 2026 takes place on Friday, July 24. The date symbolizes that self-care is a 24/7 priority. It acts as a global reminder to practice healthy habits, preventative health measures, and mental wellness every day of the year.
