Really happy to have finished the course update for New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapists Association (NZMPA)'s Peripheral Nervous System Dysfunction 😊.

Thank you to Richard Ellis, who built the original course, for laying such a solid foundation to continue building from!

The current course includes an online lecture series with quizzes and supplementary learning tools, followed by an in-person day focused on practical hands on assessment and management.

I am looking forward to our next dates of July 19th-20th in Wellington. If you're a physiotherapist interested in upskilling your assessment and management toolbox for the peripheral nervous system you can sign up here: https://www.nzmpa.org.nz/comt-w3-elbow-wrist-and-hand-peripheral-nervous-system/

Are you 18 or over? Pain free? Healthy?

Researchers at Auckland University of Technology are testing the reliability of the effects of resistance exercise on pressure sensitivity.

You will be asked to attend three sessions. The first session will be up to 1 hour long while the second and third sessions will be up to 2 hours long. You will be asked to perform both isometric knee extension and dynamic knee extension resistance exercises and we will test your pressure sensitivity before and after exercise.

Topic: “I don’t know why I’ve got this pain!” Allostasis as a possible explanatory model

Explaining the onset and maintenance of pain can be challenging in many clinical presentations. Allostasis encompasses the mechanisms through which humans adapt to stressors to maintain physiological stability. Due to related neuro-endocrine-immune system effects, allostasis and allostatic load (the cumulative effects on the brain and body that develop through the maintenance of physiological stability) offer the potential to explain the development and maintenance of musculoskeletal pain in certain cases. This paper outlines the concept of allostatic load, highlights the evidence for allostatic load in musculoskeletal pain conditions to date, and discusses mechanisms through which allostatic load influences pain, with particular focus on hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system function and central, brain-driven governance of these systems. Finally, through case examples, consideration is given as to how allostatic load can be integrated into clinical reasoning and how it can be used to help explain pain to individuals and guide clinical decision-making.

While it's taken a bit of a backseat this year in terms of quality and attention, I have been working in the background on clarity of direction for the channel. Quality and salient content to come 👌

I am looking forward to the journey ahead with everyone and what's on the horizon 😊.

Grateful for some recent teaching opportunities!

This month, I am lecturing for the Master of Physiotherapy program. It's been a fantastic experience so far.

Fortunately, I was also able to spend a day teaching for the Auckland Proactive team.

More to come 😊

Quadruped clam exercise for hip pain | The MSK Physio

The quadruped clam can be seen as a progression of a side lying clam exercise (a commonly prescribed rehab exercise for the hip). What is the benefit here? Essentially, this exercise helps coordinate abdominal tension while moving the hips and pelvis. Second to this, local exercise tends to provide local pain relief (1).

So if one, has certain types of hip pain, they will likely get some relief from exercising the hip muscles! This can be a necessary skill to regain after and hip, pelvic or torso injury.

In this video I discuss the usefulness of the exercise, along with how to prescribe it and increase the load.
